Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I've just joined the forums after being type 1 for about 32 years. Lots and lots of changes in that time and things are moving on at a pace now. I'm fortunate enough to have a fantastic supportive team at my local hospital and I'm currently using Medtronic 780g with Guardian 4 sensors.

Welcome to the forum @DKM

Good to have your experience in here, and I hope that you are finding the closed loop as effective as I am. I certainly think about my diabetes a lot less and love the amount of sleep that I now get.

I still find I need to tweak bolus ratios at times, and I was getting a bit complacent, so it took me by surprise that I needed to get involved again. Extended periods of even gentle exercise sometimes fox the pump but it could also be that that is often at the same time as eating out, and guessing carbs. Any tips welcome.

I just focus on reducing the variables as necessary , and deal with the hiccups that arise.

Thank you! There have certainly been a huge amount of advances in diabetes care since I was diagnosed and had to buy my own BG meter which was a great big metal thing!

I've been on insulin pumps for about 15 years or so, mostly Medtronic or Accu-chek, spent a while on Libre sensors then was the first patient at my clinic to move over to the closed loop on the Medtronic 780g last year. I'm allergic to all forms of insulin so the gentle trickle of insulin from a pump has helped in terms of the reaction I was experiencing from larger doses with pen injecting.

The closed loop system is really amazing isn't it, it has taken me a while to be more 'hands off' though after spending so many years thinking about blood sugars along with constant checking and adjusting and I agree with you about exercise - even grocery shopping - can fox the Guardian system and I've not had much joy with the temporary target setting, just leaving it and keeping an eye to make sure it's not dropping too fast appears to be work better for me, along with exercising at about the same time every day if I can so it takes it as a routine and seems to cope better.

I've been using the Carelink reports to keep an eye on things and make adjustments if I need to. I've adjust my ratios slightly today, a little at a time with these seems to be the way to go and it's nice that you can change them by 0.1 isn't it.

The joy of a full night's sleep and waking up with perfect blood sugars every day though! 🙂

Hello and welcome @DKM glad you've joined us 🙂

That's great to hear what an improvement the Medtronic 780g and Guardian 4 sensors have made for you. It must be a relief to be able to tolerate the gentle trickle of insulin via a pump rather than reacting to injections.

Thank goodness for tech 🙂

Thank you Flower 🙂 every pump has been such an improvement on the previous versions but the closed loop is really fab!

Welcome to the forum @DKM

Glad you are getting on well with the MM780G, and have access to sensors for the hybrid closed loop.

Sounds like you have had a pump or two before?

Thank you and yes I've had quite a few pumps, the first being a Disetronic in 2004. Things have come a long way since then!
