Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I am new to this forum but not to diabetes or Diabetes UK. I have been Type 1 for 50 years come December but everyday is a new day for learning about diabetes. After having a quick read through the various topics I can see that I will benefit from the forum. Hello everyone.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I think we will all benefit from your experience too.

Hi and welcome from me too

Nice to have another low carbing Type 1 on the forum. Hope to learn lots from your experience and that you also benefit from the wealth of knowledge and support that the forum provides. As you say, always something new to learn with diabetes.

Hello and welcome @Elaine22 glad you've found us

I hope things have gone as well as possible for you over the past nigh on 50 years, it's definitely an ongoing learning curve.

Are you on MDI or using a pump? Libre or cgm?

Hi Elaine22, wow 50 years, I’m a mere stripling at 7 years although sometimes it feels like a lifetime. Welcome aboard 🙂

Welcome to the forum @Elaine22

We’ve a fair few long-termers on the forum so you will be in good company with your decades of diabetes experience.

I’m only a relative beginner with only 30 years under my belt. But yes… every day is a learning day with diabetes!

Thanks for the welcome folks. In answer to the questions flower I use need and syringes. I tried the pen more than once but it always let me down so I am a bit wary of anything where I am not in control and I can't see the insulin going in after those experiences with the pen where I went very high as basically I wasn't getting my insulin. I tried the Libre and even went onto Libre 2 but the inaccuracies against the finger prick were up to 3 when my blood sugar was neither low or high so I couldn't trust it to calculate my does of insulin. I actually posted this on another thread and Helli replied. I really wanted the scans to work as your fingers get quite bruised with finger pricking about 6 - 8 times a day!

Hi Elaine, Welcome from me too! WOW 50 years. I'm only just pushing 20. Looking forward to learning lots from you!

Not sure about that I think you learns the majority that you need to know in the first 20 years and a bit less as you go on but you do keep learning and things change. When I was first diagnosed as a child I had to boil up a glass and stainless steel needle and syringe and use it many times. Also had only urine to test your sugar so it was really hard to know if you were on the right amount of insulin. They also encouraged you to eat lots of carbs so you had no chance in the first 10 years. Thankfully things have got better.

Yes, I remember when I was a small child and a great aunt had diabetes, the equipment on show in her kitchen/sitting room was horrific! It apparently made her a complete invalid. My mother used to go to do her cleaning and great uncle waited on her hand and foot, whilst she sat permanently in an armchair knitting.
