Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, I'm new to the forum but not diabetes. Have been Type 1 for 34 years, now on Novorapid and Levemir after asking to go on multiple injections after being on Humilin Mixtard for 32 years. (Diabetic Nurse didn't want me to change when I asked to previously as she said I had good control - my HBA1c was usually around 40 - 42, however I was getting frequent highs and then lows throughout the day). Anyway eventually was able to change a couple of years ago and went on the Dafne course. Finding it a lot better and can generally keep by blood glucose within range (although with some highs that seem to come from nowhere!)

Hi and welcome.
So pleased you got a DAFNE course and MDI. Do you have Freestyle Libre? I imagine you will have learned about it on the DAFNE course? An Abbott Rep came in one afternoon on our DAFNE course to give us input. It is a great bit of kit and helps enormously with diabetes management but also confidence
That is quite shocking that a DSN kept you on mixed insulin for so long.... or was it the diabetic nurse at the GP practice?
Anyway, good that you have found us and I hope you will find the forum as friendly and helpful as I have. It helps enormously to be able to exchange thoughts and ideas with other people who understand the day to day trials of living with diabetes and pick up info and tips.

Hi, thanks for the welcome. It was the diabetic nurse at the GP's who was reluctant for me to swap. Don't have a freestyle libre as yet, but did learn about it on the Dafne course. They also went through the different pumps that were available.

I attended a carb counting course at another hospital in the same Trust, so didn't know the personnel so on the first day lunchtime they each allocated themselves to different attendees and virtually the first Q the DSN asked me was 'Who treats your diabetes, Jenny?' I started listing consultant, GP .... and at the end, I added - and me I spose. She burst out laughing and said, that is the only acceptable name on the list - but should be the FIRST one - the rest of us can only try and help you and that's the whole reason why we're here in the first place!

It would do a helluva lot of the medical profession good, to listen to that message.

It's a reminder that overrides the importance of ruddy targets their employer has set.

Welcome to the forum @Baiflo

And well done for making the switch after so many years!

Glad to hear your have done so well and the transition has gone smoothly.

I was only on mixed insulin for a couple of years and found it very restrictive and, to be honest, a bit of a nightmare - you were clearly much better at it thanK was! 🙂
