Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi, my name is Cassie. I've been type 1 diabetic since 1972. I was 18 when I was diagnosed, I'm well controlled and no issues or complications. I've three children and three grandchildren. My last HbA1C 5 months ago was 53 (8.6). I use Levemir twice daily, 10 units am, 5 units pm. And Novorapid for my meals. I carb count (attended a carb counting course in 2013). I'm on a free trial for a Freestyle Libre - two months so far and still undecided about it. Also on the waiting list for a pump but also undecided if the pump is for me. Most of the time I like to get on with my life and enjoy it and have never obsessed too much about being Diabetic. That's all really, I look forward to reading all the varied info on here. I live in Scotland, although originally from England. I have found the diabetic care in NHS Scotland to be absolutely wonderful. I am fortunate to have an excellent consultant and diabetic team who are always there for me. Plus I live in the only health authority in Scotland which is giving free trials of the Freestyle, and if I do end up liking it and can get this all free on prescription. I hope sometime in the future everyone can be as fortunate, as it does seem unfair it is all so patchy and not joined up across the nation.

Welcome to the forum Cassie from a T2

Hi @Cassie and welcome from a fellow Scotlander (born and bred though 🙂) xx

Hi Cassie, and welcome - my Avatar is Calgary beach on the Isle of Mull, though I’m not a Muilleach by birth. One of the benefits of living in Alba when you have diabetes is the website MyDiabetes My Way. It’s based in Dundee, but holds my diabetes results, and weight, and often gets my HbA1c report before I see the nurse, so I can get my excuses in early. Everyone who has diabetes can register. It’s not exactly the slickest website, but really quite useful.

Thank you! Yes I'm already registered with MyDiabetes My Way, it's a good site! Although would agree it's not the slickest website! Had awful password probs when I first began to use it. But it's very good for keeping an eye on all your results in one place!

Welcome cassie

Hello Cassie, and welcome 🙂
Great to hear your diabetes is still so well-behaved after 46 years.
I'm on the waiting list for a pump too, and also on the list to borrow a hospital CGM (can't get the Libre on the NHS here, and the CGM loan will only be for a week, if it ever materialises).

I've no idea why it is so well behaved as I was diagnosed when I was just 18, in fact on my actual 18th birthday. After that I led a rather rebellious and hell bent youth. So thank you for your welcome! I'm not the best diabetic, and most of the time I try to ignore it, as its contraryness doesn't deserve my loyalty and hard work towards at least being "good". My diabetes consultant (who is truly wonderful) sent me to a nationwide gene research project in 2014 - to assist them to find out just how some diabetics type 1 have so many issues, and some like me, have so little. It took a whole morning of blood tests, questions and family history and because I now have three grand children, I'm happy to have helped in any way so research can may be find an answer and a cure. Maybe I have good genes, who knows? I'm well controlled nowadays, and aim to continue being so. Just I'm not a goody two shoes......and never will be. Like to sometimes live in the wild side.
