Hi all, I am the mother of a 12 year old daughter who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes on 31st October last year. I was not entirely new to it as my sister was diagnosed aged 14 about 30 years ago, but things have changed a lot. Struggling at times to come to terms with it all. Hope to find some support and help here! 🙂

Hi Amanda. Welcome 🙂

We have a thriving and supportive parents section on the forum as well as the rest of us who can give some insight firsthand (like your sister, I was diagnosed at 13 about 33 years ago).🙂

As you say, things have changed a bit in the intervening years! 🙄

Hi Amanda, welcome to the forum 🙂 There are lots of supportive parents here, and it's also good to hear the experiences of the people who have grown up with diabetes, so I hope you will get a lot out of using the forum 🙂

If you're not already aware of these things, I'd recommend having a browse through our Useful links thread. You might like to get a a children's JDRF pack for your daughter. Also worth its weight in gold is Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas - a must for everyone with Type 1 diabetes 🙂

Another site you might like to check out is Children with Diabetes, with lots of lovely parents, many of whom also post here.

No question is considered 'silly' so if it's bothering you, then please ask! What insulin regime is she on?

Hello Amanda, sorry to hear about your daughter, but you have come to the right place if you need support.

Hello Amanda,
I'm sure you will find lots of people to give you support on here. 🙂

Hi Amanda, welcome to the forum. 🙂

Hi Amanda and a warm welcome to the forum

Thank you all I am feeling better already. My daughter was initially on novorapid and lantus using the pen which she managed ok, but about 4 weeks ago she started using an omnipod which she loves and it had made a huge difference. In the last 4 days though her glucose levels have been constantly high (btn 14-21) and we have not been able to bring them down to a reasonable level with extra insulin. There does not appear to be an explanation, it is like the insulin has stopped being effective. Even the nurse is baffled. My daughter is upset and frustrated and I am worried. Any ideas anyone? Please!!

Sorry to hear your daughers levels are running high.
Is she sickening for something?
I find mine run high before I develop a cold and my friends son who is ten experiences the same thing.
I hope they settle down soon. Xxx

Welcome Amanda, it's so hard when a child gets a medical condition like Diabetes:( I know there are many parents on here who will give advice and support. Best wishes Sheena

Several Parents have found recently the insulin has gone 'off' - have you tried a new vial, or alternatively a new prescription in case there's something up with what you are using?

How often do you refill the Pod?

You are spot on! Changed insulin on Thursday to new lot from chemist and her readings have improved greatly. I think the insulin degenerated while we were in Florida possibly because the fridge temp was set too low (never thought of it getting too cold, only too warm!!). Such a relief. The pod gets changed and refilled every 3 days. Thank you!! :D
