Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone. I was diagnosed type 2 January 2016 with an Hba1c of 60. Was put on Metformin 500mg twice a day. Hba1c steadily reduced over the years with low carb/reduction in weight protocol until it reached 39. At that point my GP reduced my dose to half. 500mg once a day saying I didn't need the other half as my control was good. It has since gone up again to 46. I read on a thyroid forum (I have Hashimoto's hypothyroidism) that if you are in the "pre diabetic" range (which I obviously now am) that you are still as at risk for all the nasties that diabetes can cause as if you were in the diabetic range of 48 and above. My aunt went blind from her type 2 so I am worried that my level of 39 Hba1c and my Metformin dose of 500 mg twice a day should have been allowed to remain as they were. Any advice/thoughts would be welcomed. Thanks.

Hi, has your diet changed in the meantime as in have you increased your carb intake, or maybe reduced your exercise? If not maybe it’s a worth a phone call to your DN just to run it past them.

No, everything is as before. The only difference is the dose.

It’s a difficult one because there are loads of people on here who take no medication with levels like ours and seem to manage fine. However every one of us is different. My DN wants me to stay on 2 a day although my level is 43 and I am happy with that. I would recommend you give the surgery a ring for a chat as it is obviously concerning you and I understand why. If they want you to stay just one then perhaps you could request another HbA1c test in 3 months to see how you are getting on and review things then.

Thankyou for your advice. I think I will ring the surgery as you suggest. Maybe I'm a bit paranoid about levels after my aunt going blind. I just kind of feel like all my hard work to get my Hba1c down has been disregarded and surely lower is better. I'll phone the GP. x

Hi @Hedgewitch. You are very good to be taking control of your health and certainly, as the advice already given, I think its very fair to want to go and chat about this more fully with your GP. My advice is write a list of question/concerns you have, the most important at the top. You will only have 10 mins, so make it count. That way you wont come out thinking darn it i forgot to ask this or that. All the best. Let us know how you get on.
