Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello,

I am new to all this malarky - forums that is not diabetes. I am now 34 years old and have had type 1 diabetes since the age of 4. Well she must know what shes doing by now I hear you cry... well yes I do know mostly what I should be doing, but that doesnt necessarily mean that I do it! And my other problem I think I have is because I have had it for so long the healthcare professionals assume that I know stuff, which I dont because its new or I have forgotten. 30 years is plenty of time to get into bad habits.

Anyway the good news is that I havent had much in the way of complications, had to have a tiny bit of lasering on my eyes a few years ago but apart from that I am fit and healthy, go to aerobics twice a week and enjoy my life. I am really trying to tighten up on my control now as me and my man are talking about having a baby (its now or never) So I thought I would join your merry group for a bit of help and encouragement. I too want to be acheiving Hba1c results that make people congratulate rather than commiserate!

Cheers,
Hev x

Hello Hev,

Welcome to the forum. You make my thirteen years of type one pale into insignificance with your three decades. I know just what you mean, people ask me if I know it all after thirteen years.

Anyhow, feel free to ask anything that you want and we'll all do our best to answer and put your mind at ease about any issues. Feel free to PM me if you want and I'm more than happy to chat. I could give you my MSN details if you wanted them. Please do ask anthing that you want to, we'll always help.

Tom

Ask away, I'm happy to answer anything that you want. Let's see if we can pool our knowledge successfully. That's something we all do with a high degree of proficiency on this site.

Hi Hev, welcome to the forum!🙂 Things seem to be changing all the time in the world of diabetes, so you're on the right track by looking to learn from other people's knowledge and experience! We can learn a huge amount from the 'old hands', but equally we can learn from those most recently diagnosed who have been exposed to the very latest views on care regimes and control.

People here from all walks of life, and all very friendly and happy to help, so ask away! And don't worry if you're unsure about the forum and how it all 'works'. You've made an excellent start and anything you need to know just ask a moderator or another member 🙂

Hi Bev,
Thank you very much for welcome. It is amazing how much has changed since I was diagnosed as a child. When I was diagnosed I had injections twice a day with a glass syringe which had to be sterilised in this plastic thing, there was no electric testing meter you just had to hold the strip up to a colour chart... and pumps hadnt even been thought of!
I hope you and your son are getting your heads round the whole diabetes thing, it is amazing how much things have changed and improved for diabetics over the years, and I am sure will continue to do so. If you think I can be of any help please ask!

Hi Northerner,
Thank you for welcome. I had been tempted to join this site for a while, as lots of nice people, good advice etc - but what really swung it for me was when I saw the picture you posted of the robot made of old cartridges and testing strips - Absolutely awesome!!

Thanks Am,
Not sure I want my other half on here reading what I am thinking though! Just kidding - he is brilliant, I knew he was the one for me when he started recognising my hypos, instead of just thinking I was in a strange mood (as I am sure previous boyfriends did).
