Hi, and welcome to the forum 🙂 It's still relatively early days for you yet, but with a bit of help, support and dedication to the cause you WILL feel better, I promise you!

The metformin may be partially to blame for your nausea and tummy problems, although the side effects generally wear off by 3 months so it would be worth speaking to your doctor about it as there may be alternatives that can be prescribed.

Have a look at the Useful links thread - there are some very good book recommendations in there, particularly Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, and the GL Diet books. GL (Glycaemic Load) is a way of combining food so that you can retain flexibility in your meals but the glucose in the food will be released slowly and steadily after eating, which is just what you want in order to keep your blood sugar levels stable and as close to normal range as possible. By learning what foods work best for you and keeping good blood sugar control you will start to feel better and have more energy. It takes time and patience, but this is about changing your diet and lifestyle forever, not just for a short period whilst you lose weight.

If you can fit in some regular exercise - walking briskly for half an hour a day is ideal - then this will be a tremendous help too. Please ask any questions you may have, nothing is considered 'silly', and we'll try our best to help you out 🙂

Welcome to the forum AAT 🙂

Hi AAT and welcome to the forum. I'd agree that your tummy problems are possibly caused by the Metformin, very common side effect. It should wear off but have a chat with your doc about it. Avoiding too many starchy carbs can help too, especially white flour products.

You've done the right thing joining here as there's loads of good information and advice. Have a look in the section on food and recipes for tips on what to eat. There's an excellent Weight Loss group too. Take care. XXXXX

Hiya!

If your tummy can't settle down, ask to try Glucophage SR which is 'slow release' Metformin and people find usually is kinder to the tum. They don't prescribe it first off as it is more expensive than the ordinary kind.

I agree that a lot of T2's do report that cutting down on the carbs also helps a great deal.

It's hugely more expensive 😉 😛 ?3.07 for a 28 tab pack versus ?1.07 for the normal stuff (or so says BNF)

Cutting carbs and switching to slow release Low Glycemic index carbs is also helpful. Things like having new potatoes instead of mash or jackets. Linseed bread instead of white.

Hi and welcome AAT,

Has your GP given you any advice in respect of testing your blood sugars? I'm sure you'd find it of great help in deciding what sort of foods affect you cos everyone is different in what they can and can't eat.
