Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello I am new to using any type of forum but feel the need to communicate with like minded people. I live out in the country so don’t seem to have any groups near me to chat to. I am retired now and have type 2 diabetes which doesn’t seem to be controlled by tablets although I think I have a good diet and do a reasonable amount of exercise.

Hello and welcome to the forum. Maybe as you think the tablets are not controlling your diabeties its time to go back to your GP or ask to be referred to a dsn How long have you been dx ed M ore posters will be along soon to offer advice im sure

Hi @LindaB and welcome. What you may think of as a healthy diet may not actually be healthy for a diabetic. The NHS is still churning out the mantra that low fat = healthy eating, but for many Type 2s this doesn't work. Of course not all diabetics are the same, but the general feeling is low-carb, sensible fats and protein. For fruit berries are best, and for vegetables go for leafy greens. Needless to say that spuds, bread, rice and pasta are on the "to reduce" list, right up there with cake and biscuits. Are you on metformin?

Hi @LindaB and welcome to the group.
I too live out in the country, so no "meet and greet groups" anywhere near me, but this forum has so many experienced people, it's probably better in many ways

Alan 😉

Welcome to the forum. Would you like to say which medications you are on and what your latest HbA1C is as that will help people make some suggestions as to how you might make some dietary changes that will help. GPs often don't recognise how powerful diet can be and tend to prescribe more and more medication.

Welcome to the forum @LindaB

Glad you have joined us!

There's something very powerful about being able to compare notes and experiences with other people who are 'walking the walk' just like you are. Plus on a forum like this we have hundreds of people all finding their own way through the maze of options and possibilities - so whatever question you have you are likely to be met with a number of different shared experiences that you can consider to find your own way.

Diabetes can be irritatingly fickle and individual, so what works for one person may not work the same for another (or simply may not appeal to them!), but the hive mind of the forum is always full of other options and strategies you can try.

Keep asking away with questions 🙂

Hello @LindaB and welcome to the forum. I live out in the sticks too so don't know many people with diabetes. I found this forum a few months ago. There's so much information and experiences from people living with diabetes. They are happy to answer questions and give support when you need to vent or just feel that dealing with diabetes issues is an uphill battle.

Thank you for all your replies. My HbA1C was 91 at my last reading up from 90 even after adding glimepiride 3mg to my list of metformin 2000mg and empagliflozin to my meds. I have an appointment with the diabetes nurse and she has already said I may be going onto insulin. This is driving me up the wall. I have lost weight (slimming world diet) and have increased my activity. Have to say the stress doesn’t help the diet as I am a comfort eater with a healthy appetite! Thank goodness salad and fruit are a go to as well as the ‘bad’ foods crisps and biscuits.
Have been looking at other posts on the forum and this thankfully helping.

You certainly have quite a cocktail of medications there and therefore you need to be careful of reducing your carbs too much but the SW menu plans are quite high in carbs and would be too much for many. Have you told your SW consultant you are Type 2 as they do profess to have suitable options. Of course you could make some lower carb substitutions for some of the higher carb foods.
You may benefit for some strategic before and 2 hour after eating testing with your home blood glucose monitor to see how well you tolerate the SW meals.
It is no good taking all those medications whilst still eating meals and foods which are causing the problem.

hi @LindaB
I hope that after your forthcoming review with your DSN you get the right mixture of meds so your next Hba1c is better than your last.
when you say your a comfort eater with a healthy appetite, is that excuse my bluntness
but an admission you know you have been eating to much of the wrong things 🙄

I know because I used to & still do but not as often now
there are quite a few of us on here that can agree, we were / are that person

regarding going up the wall if you need to take insulin, please be assured if it’s needed it’s not so bad, I was there quite a few years ago, and was just so anxious about needing insulin
but know I know it was needed ( still take a small dose twice daily)
good to see you’ve upped the activity :star:
