Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone. Just been diagnosed with Type 2 which came as a shock. No symptoms and never thought I might have diabetes. It came about after I attended my annual health check up ( family heart and cancer problems) Awaiting my visit to the Diabetic clinic in a weeks time. My GP has said no need to take medication or monitor blood sugar levels, just diet and exercise . Seems a bit daunting but ready to adjust my lifestyle to help with this condition.

Sigh.
Welcome to the forum - but you might consider your GPs advice not to test against the experience of many on the forum actually dealing with diabetes.
By testing after eating you can see almost at once just how much carbohydrate you should eat and if there are any anomalies - for instance, beans and peas seem to have almost double the listed amount of carbs judging by my tests, but others can include all sorts of foods I can't cope with.

There is some excellent advise in the post 'First Day' from feesal so you could have a read of that to start with.

Hi Andrew65, welcome to the forum.

It's always shocking to get a diagnosis without symptoms so I'm glad you're taking action.

It's a personal decision but I personally like to know my HbA1c number which is a result of your blood test or daily finger prick numbers to ensure the food I'm eating is helping not hindering.

A lot of what we are told is healthy may not work well with the goal of lowering blood sugar levels so do have a look around the site for ideas on managing carb and sugar levels.

Thanks for that advice. Will have a good talk with my team of medics when I meet them next week for the first time. I admit that i was a bit puzzled as to how I would keep an eye on things if I wasn’t required to test my blood sugar levels. Let’s hope they give me some insight.

If you read the posts in the thread by Jurasik who is also newly diagnosed there is lots of information and recommendations about testing.
