Hi Everyone,Diagnosed Last Friday Type 2.Do Not See Diabetic Nurse Until 6th August.Would Appreciate Some Help And Informaton Please

Hello MickyD, welcome to the forum. Did they put you on medication, or give you advice, or have they just left you to stew for the next month??

Let us know a bit more about your diabetes... How did you come to be diagnosed? Is there a family history? Have you been told anything about diet, and carbohydrates in particular? Do you need to tackle a weight problem?

Sorry to fire questions at you, but there are lots of us here with all sorts of experience. My own relates to controlling my blood glucose by losing shedloads (technical term for 6 stone).

Hi MickyD, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad that you have found us so quickly. There are lots of friendly, experineced people here who will be happy to help out with any questions you may have - so please ask away if anything is confusing or worrying you.

Although it is a serious condition, the good thing about diabetes is that it can be controlled with the right knowledge and application. I would recommend reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and investing in a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should be standard issue for everyone at diagnosis, as they will help you to understand what diabetes is all about and strategies to control it.

Have you been put on any medication for your diabetes?

hi mikey hope all goes well with dn....let us no how you got on and welcome 🙂

P.S carbs are your enemy!!

Hello Micky - first of all - knowledge is everything and so you really can't read too much. I was diagnosed last December - spent most of December crying and then finally realised that I needed to take control - my doctor told me not to change anything - given that I'm an overweight, middle aged, full time professional with a stressful job with 2 wonderful but quite stressful teenagers, who thought that a couple of bars of choccie a week was fine - well clearly that wasn't the best advice.
There's lots of great refs on this site - I've only just read Maggie Davey's letter (link on the info for newbies) and it's just so sensible (I haven't done O'level biology for a few decades and so a lot of stuff I've been reading really wasn't very intelligible for me).
Have a read around and go to your doc's with some questions and start trying to make some changes - there's lots that can be done by you right away - it's very hard to be positive in the initial months but this is a warning - make changes and you will be fitter and healthier than ever - it's an opportunity to take control. Good luck

weelcome to the site

If you are like me you got very little useful information form the Dr: ---
I was given pills and told to eat a low GI diet no explanation.
Low GI == foods which take longer to digest.
brown bread with seeds good -- white bread bad.
porridge good --- cereal with sugar bad.
Drop normal carbonated drinks == go for low sugar.
Lower cholesterol limit dairy products and red meat ==== eat oily fish (I do not like fish that much).
List questions for your Desmond course -- if you can take some one with you do so - they need to help not hinder -- my wife?s attitude is that it is my problem I must deal with it. thjis lead to me thinking so-- it I dont care either, bad idea, keep on top of it your self
