Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed after a blood test last week. Last year I was below the threshold but this year, slightly over. Any advice welcome.

Welcome to the forum. It sounds as if you are just in the diabetic zone so I hope you have been given the opportunity to reduce your blood glucose level by some lifestyle changes before any medication as it is very possible.
The biggest impact will be from reducing carbohydrates in your diet, so cutting out some obvious things like cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks including fruit juice and reducing portion size of some of the other big hitters, potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, breakfast cereals and tropical fruits. There is no need to completely cut out carbohydrates but reduce to an amount your body can tolerate. As everybody is different it is difficult to be prescriptive about how much but a guide for people following a low carb approach is less than 130g per day, that is a good starting point but some people do need to go lower to get their blood glucose to where it needs to be.
This link is a sensible approach which has some do's and don'ts and some ideas for modifying your diet https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Whatever you do has to be enjoyable and sustainable for the long term. Increasing exercise if you can also helps.

Welcome to the forum @Betwa

Sorry to hear you’ve just nudged over the line to join our hallowed club, but glad you have found us 🙂

Have you been making changes over the last year or so to try to help your metabolism out a little?

As you’ll discover there are a wide variety of different strategies being used by forum members to try to help, manage or reduce the impact of their diabetes.

Some concentrate on trying to lose weight, especially weight built up around the middle, which may be connected to a build up of visceral fat. Others concentrate on management strategies involving limiting either total carbohydrate intake, or calories, or both. Still others are exploring surgical options.

And for each person there are also a variety of different approaches within any overall strategy.

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach - and mostly it seems to revolve around trying to find methods that suit your particular diabetes, which is likely to be as individual as you are 🙂
