confuses me is why there are morbidly obese people who are not Diabetic and yet I have got it
Welcome Chaobaby,

D is a complicated disease, particularly for T2's..... There are many factors which can contribute to developing the disease, obesity is just one, myself there is likely genetic predisposition as my Grandfather was T2 & my brother is pre-diabetic. Our diet is another factor which helps develop insulin resistance, for many years we have been consuming way more refined carbs than we have in previous generations.... If I had eaten the way I do now then perhaps I might not be D, who knows?

Rather than dwell on the causes, I am doing something positive about carb intake & exercise.... Also reaping the benefits of being significantly lighter & healthier.

I think that illustrates how obesity isn't the whole story. There's probably a genetic component which isn't fully understood. Some obese people don't get Type 2 diabetes, others who are normal weight do.
mum's diabetic, she is only slightly over weight but like its belly fat, we are very prone to apple shape in my family, I also had PCOS which is linked to Insulin resistance. It is frustrating when there's very big people who don't have Diabetes and I am counting every carb and sugar in my diet,

i had a bad carb addcition and sugar addiction i never liked fried food but i know the carbs have caused my weight gain and the addicition was linked to my insulin resistance, since my diagnosis I measure my carb portions and look at the sugar and carb content on any foods that I buy, I am amazed at the carb content in things, of course my juice addiction didn't help, I was very addicted to fruit juice, lots and lots of it, now I get a glass and put a little non concentrated no added sugar fruit juice in the bottom and top it up with sparkling water.

I've said this before, but it bears repeating: the "obesity causes diabetes" tabloid rubbish is a classic case of the cum hoc fallacy ("with this, therefore caused by this"). The truth is that as @Northerner has pointed out more than once, 20% of people diagnosed with type 2 are not overweight at diagnosis; also, 64% of British adults are overweight but only 8% have type 2, and if weight problems were a cause of type 2 rather than an effect, that figure would be at least 32%.

So there's really no need to blame yourself for having type 2, and anyway doing so won't help you cope with it. 🙄 As you will have gathered by now, this forum is a great place for help and support. 🙂

Correlation is not causation... o_O

I' have never being obese, I got a time I was overweight (with a BMI of 29) but when I was diagnosed my BMI was 26, overweight, but near the acceptable range for what it means. For a long time I was with a BMI of 23-24 then I started to gain weight because I got cravings and started to eat snacks, then having craving then eat another snack then having cravings...

What could happen is that pre diabetes could cause cravings that cause obesity and kicks in the full fledged diabetes.
When I got a BG fasting level on 95 or 99 mg/dl (5.3 - 5.6) and my GP said that was all ok (because under 100 mg/dl) and to continue to take statins i followed the advice. When he gave me for the weight gain a generic dieting and exercise advice, without sending me to the dietician i followed the advice.

What I think is that in some cases the obesity is caused by insulin resistance and self sustain itself. On some other cases obesity has other causes, a bad food choice and a too rich diet aided by the presence of low quality and cheap food that is calorie-rich. Food that is on most case advertised heavily, and advertise heavily as "healthy".

for a long time people said Diabetes was from eating too much sugar and I believed that as I had a really sweet tooth, old people in my family called it "sugar Diabetes". I don't feel quite so bad now for being Diabetic and admit I have seen too many programmes about fat, diet etc with morbidly obese people being told to get their act together or they'd get heart attacks, diabetes etc. My BMI is 28 but my weight gain is all visceral fat.

Likewise I wonder if the radiotherapy I had last year following breast cancer has somehow triggered my diabetes. Or maybe it's just stress related!!

I believe @robert@fm is right. My family has a history of obesity, high cholesterol, high BP and strokes, but no... I repeat no diabetics... except me. I'm the only one and I am obese, but not T2 - I managed to acquire LADA/1.5 instead. I have Low BP, am anaemic and have a long list of other issues no-one else in my family has. I'm an oddity I am.

According to articles I've seen over the last year or so, it may be the other way round. A genetic fault causes the obesity which causes T2.

I had womb cancer and had treatment this year maybe the stress triggered it, after the op to remove all my reproductive organs I gained 1stone mainly from sheer lack of excersise as I had to rest for 6 weeks

Type111c diabetic. Hoping to pick up some tips and advice.
Hi Hepato-pancreato, welcome to the forum 🙂 We have a few people here with a similar diagnosis, so please feel free to ask any questions you may have 🙂 I'd suggest writing an introductiory thread in the 'Newbies' section as your post here might get overlooked. Click on the Newbies section, then 'Post new thread' in the upper right of the screen 🙂
