Hiya 🙂

Have been dxed with Dtype 2 a few weeks ago and am kind of ? with it 🙂

My biggest thing because the nurse has decided i dont need to use a blood monitering kit to test anything and everyone is telling me i do, even the booklet she gave me to go off and read said to do bloods if unsure what they are or should be.

She asked me to keep a food diary for a week and go back and see her which i did do and them she checked my feet. Am very confused about all of this

I am not as yet on meds but will be in the next few weeks

Lynne 🙂

Hi Lynne and welcome to the forum hun, Personally i have tested since the start but it does depend on your nurse/diabetic care team i guess, some have had to go out and buy there own kit and strips because there nurse wont budge, i have always advocated testing it is the best way to show you and help you sort out what foods do what to your blood sugars.

Thanks Steph

Im kind of in limbo with the whole thing and kind of confused and feel out of control and dont know what to do.

Apart from being told about portion control and given a plate and a cup that has measurements on thats basically it.

I dont understand if ur sposed to regulate your sugar how do you know if ur doing that without testing

*SIGH*

Hi

Welcome to the forum x

hi lynne welcome to the forum..its tough and very confusing when first dx many of us feel out on a limb but thats where the forum can help x have a good look around and no questions are rgarded silly here .

You got a plate and a free cup, wow what is the NHS coming to, free test strips next (not). Maybe you should pee in the cup and get some diastix to test for sugar (ha ha). You have been diagnosed with a serious condition and you should read all you can about it. There is lots of support here and lots of people in the same boat. Whatever you do, don't loose your sense of humour.
P.S. put Mars bars in your food diary, that will give them something to tell you to stop eating.
Did they tell you what your reading were for the diagnosis or did they do a specific test?

Hi Lynn and welcome. 🙂

My DSN didn't issue me with a monitor for a couple of months, she gave me time to get my heaad around things. Maybe yours is the same. Briefly, as mine said "There is so much to take in at first that you wouldn't know what to do with the reading anyway".

Hi Lynne, welcome to the forum.

Hi Lynne, welcome to the forum 🙂 When I was diagnosed I read up everything I could about diabetes and (as you have done!) found forums online to see what 'real' people were talking about. This forum didn't exist then, but I signed up when it started and it has been a lifeline - terrific, knowledgeable people and great support when you need it!

One book that is frequently recommended by others is Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year - An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed by Gretchen Becker. You might be able to pick up a copy from your library.

Thanks Everyone 🙂

The nurse i see said quote - *WHO = World Health Organisation doesnt want newly diagnosed people using blood moniters* it certainly is a mind field BUT i am enjoying reading up on nutrition and such and how the body uses various foods and such to work LOL its a fascinating subject shame i had to get DB to find out LOL

Hi Lynne,

I'm type 2 and i'm not supposed to use test strips, my Diabetes nurse explained that she didn't want me to get too hung up on getting the numbers right when i'm in no danger of getting a low reading. I'm not entirely sure i agree, but it's not her fault, our local health authority has decreed that type 2 diabetics on Metformin shall not test, unless they are ill.
Unless you happen to live in Northampton (and if so then Hi!!) i'd ask your nurse about testing. You can but try and it will sound like you're taking diagnosis seriously and intelligently by reading and researching about diabetes. If that's no good, the machines themselves are fairly inexpensive (indeed you can often get them free from drug companies) and the strips can be bought over the counter in chemists (for around the exorbatant price of 25 pounds for 50....ho hum) They're simple to use too even a needle phobic like me can do it.

Welcome to the forum, ask whatever you like, nobody minds
