Type 2
Hi. Have just signed up. Was told the week before Christmas I have type 2. Now on Metformin morning and evening. Trying to get my head around it. Going on a DESMOND course in a couple of weeks. This comes on top of serious depression and high blood pressure for a few years. A bit cross about it all as have tried to take care of myself. Be good to have somewhere to go for support.

Welcome to the forum Anne 🙂

Feel free to ask any questions, we are all friendly here. Lot's of good stuff in the Useful Links thread too!

Hi Anne, welcome to the forum 🙂 Glad you have found us so soon after diagnosis - hopefully we will be able to put your mind at ease and answer any queries or concerns you may have. Not the greatest timing for a diagnosis, I hope it didn't spoil your Christmas too much :(

It's good to hear that you've already been booked on a DESMOND course - it shows your team are up to speed on good treatment protocols. With diabetes, knowledge is certainly power, because the more you understand the more you will be able to achieve good blood glucose control and reduce your risks of any complications. It may be that your pre-diagnosis blood glucose levels were contributing to your depression, as high levels will have a detrimental effect on mood and energy levels. Hopefully, as you make adaptations to your diet and (if necessary) increase your activity levels things will begin to feel a little bit brighter.

I would highly recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - an excellent introduction and has received many good reviews from the members here. Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter also make good introductory reading and may prompt questions that you can ask here or when you go on DESMOND.

Try not to worry, and bear in mind it is much better to be diagnosed and taking action than to remain undiagnosed. Let us know if there is anything we can help you with, or just join in wherever you wish. Everyone is really friendly and helpful, and no question is considered 'silly'! 🙂 I look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi Anne,

Welcome to the forum! 🙂 Sorry you've had the diagnosis, but at least now there will be things you can do to help yourself feel as well as possible. This forum is a lovely place to find advice, let off steam etc if necessary.

All the best,

Twitchy xx

welcome Anne - I only came here last week and I have learned so much and got great advice and support. As I was advised - I got a Collins Gem carb counter book which fits in my pocket and I am quickly learning the standard amounts I can eat without spikes. As a result of smoothing out the spikes my numbers are coming down - so guess what? - that helps to lift the depression because I have acquired some degree of control! I am strictly less than 100grams of carb a day and never more than 20grams at a meal - its working for me. Stay in touch with everyone they are brilliant - best wishes. Haz

Hi Anne

There's no doubt about it, the state of your blood glucose can and does, affect mood. That ranges from having the grumps for a day, to full-blown clinical depression. Bit of a vicious circle, all in all.

But as Haz says the one thing you should be able to control in this conundrum - given the right help to do so - is your blood glucose. Metformin on it's own can't do this. You have to help do it too, using diet and exercise in combination with the medication.

You'll get lots of advice and help here, ask anything you want to.

Good luck!
