Type 2
Hi all, I have been diagnosed with type 2, a week ago. I've been put on metformin. First tablet today. A bit worried as I have IBD, and don't want to go into a flare.

Hi. Stick with it, Metformin is a fairly safe option, hence why it's so often prescribed. I had nausea when first on and found ginger tea to help, which a nurse recommended.

Welcome to the forum @rodders1960

There are lots of options to help you manage your diabetes, including various different classes of medications, and many different dietary apporaches.

Hopefully you‘ll be able to find a way of eating that suits both your BG levels and your IBD with the support of any medication which may be helpful.

Were you told the result of your HbA1c check at diagnosis? This can help you assess how tricky a time your metabolism is having, and how modest or significant the changes might be with your current menu.

Diabetes is a serious condition, but it’s also one that can usually be managed well with a few changes and adaptations - it’s something that you can learn to live well with, and it shouldn’t stop you doing things you enjoy. Try not to be disheartened about your diabetes, many people on the forum later reflect that their diagnosis became a catalyst which prompted them to make positive changes towards a healthier and more active life. Perhaps changes that they had been intending to make for years. 🙂

If standard Metformin upsets you, there is a slow release version you can request (Sukkarto). I have Diverticular Disease which is as unpleasant as IBS. I can only take a little Metformin so have been put on Canagliflozin and Linagliptin which don't affect me. I expect with IBS you are very careful with your diet anyway, so best wishes.

Hi, my first hba1c test was 99, then my last check was 75, so I'm heading in the right direction. I was diagnosed in January and my slast test was 3 weeks ago.

Thankyou. Yes it's a right minefield lol

Hi when I was on metformin I took the slow release one as the normal tablets upset my stomach
Hi, I'm on 3 a day at the moment. I do get stomach cramps, but not sure if that's the metformin or the other problems I have. I'm trying to stick with it, and see how I am at my next review, if I can manage to.

Well done on a good reduction so far. You are clearly doing something right. I managed to work out what triggered my Diverticular Disease and now avoid those foods (fatty foods, spicy foods, ice cream (sob, sob)). Have you had any success in working out what triggers your IBS? Good luck at your next test.

Well done on your reduction so far! Onward and downward 🙂
