Relationship to Diabetes

Hi guys I’m new to this groups my 16 year old grandson has been diagnosed TD1

Hello and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Hi, welcome. Feel free to ask questions or just reach out for support.

Welcome to the forum @Rac123
There is a lot to take on board at the star, but it will become part of your grandson’s new ‘normal‘ life.
Fire away with any questions that you have.

Welcome to the forum.

There is a lot to take on but my two main pieces of advice would be
- don't expect perfection. There are so many things that can affect diabetes that taking over the role of a major bodily organ is complex and mistakes will be made. Knowing how to correct them is more important than trying to avoid them.
- diabetes should not stop your grandson doing what he want. There are very few careers which are prohibited by diabetes. If Henry Slade can play rugby for England and Theresa May can run a country, diabetes should not be seen as a blocker to living your dreams.

Welcome @Rac123 🙂 I think @helli ‘s last point is very important. Diabetes won’t stop your grandson doing most things he wants to. It’s not nice to feel ‘different’ but as he gets used to things, he’ll realise that he’s still the same person and the total focus on the diabetes will gradually lessen until it becomes routine.

Hi Rac123,

Welcome to the site. We're glad that you've found us and hope you find the site useful.

Please feel free to share you HbA1c numbers and average blood sugar readings as it's often useful to note where you are starting from on your journey.

Do have a read of the forum and main site and let us know if we can help in anyway.

Welcome to the forum @Rac123

Sorry to hear about your grandson’s diagnosis with T1 diabetes.

Hopefully he will quickly be able to adjust and adapt, and begin to incorporate diabetes into his daily routine.

It can be inconvenient, fickle and frustrating at times, but it shouldn’t stop him from doing whatever he wants. Some thing will just need a bit of extra thought, preparation and some workarounds. And modern and emerging technologies and treatments can make diabetes easier to live with and improve long-term outcomes 🙂

Many members have found Type 1 Diabetes in Children Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas to be a very helpful reference guide, introduction and handbook to living with T1 diabetes.
