Why have I been given 4 Metformin each day? No insulin needles thank God.

I've been told prescribing metformin is the default thing to do. As to why 4, I don't know. I'm on 2 a day. I've still to find out why 2 and not 4.

Like all or any drug, it depends on how much of it your particular body needs as to how much of it you are prescribed. It was my understanding that Metformin needs to be started low and then built up gradually till it reaches the necessary therapeutic level to actually address what it's supposed to address, ie insulin resistance, for each person individually. Also because it's extremely likely to have quite bad gastric side effects which do wear off after a few weeks for most people - it's considered the best way to do it.

However not being at the cutting edge of T2 treatment, for all I know they now think it's better to hit it immediately with a high dose.

Hi Kniterella.
@trophywench is right. Metfartin is usually started on lower doses than you’ve been prescribed as it can cause some unpleasant waste evacuation in some people. So if you’ve just been prescribed it, I would phone the prescriber asap as it’s not normal to start out on the maximum dose of Metfartin.

What frequency and dosage? Mornings, evenings and how many?
I agree with @Ljc
I would phone and double check

Vince beat me to it as I was going to ask what have you been prescribed?
500mg x 4 daily ~ 1000mg x 4 daily? ie. 2 with your breakfast and 2 with your evening meal.
