Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi all! I just wanted to introduce myself. I'm a relatively newly diagnosed type 1 diabetic. Last year in late June, I was admitted to ICU after contracting covid triggered me to enter DKA. Now, after a few months under my belt with this new way of life, I figured it was about time that I try to connect with other people living with diabetes.

Looking forward to engaging with the online community!

Welcome to the forum @T1Sherwood . Glad that you have joined us.

It is good to have avenues to link up with others with Diabetes, and we are here to answer any questions/provide support whatever we can do. It will help us tailor our responses if you are happy to tell us a bit about how you manage your diabetes, such as
What insulins do you use?
Do you have a sensor such as a Libre?

It is a lot to take on board at the start but I hope that you are already finding that a lot of what we need to do is now just part of your ‘new normal’, becoming more automatic. Any questions that arise, just ask. Nothing is considered silly on here And there is a wealth of experience to tap into.

Welcome @T1Sherwood 🙂 Are you on injections? Do you have a Libre? I’ve had Type 1 for almost three decades (bit fed up of the daft thing now!) and have used a pump for almost two of those decades. I find this forum very helpful and also very supportive. I hope you do too.

Thank you both. I'm glad to be here!

I'm presently managing my diabetes via MDI, using both basal and bolus insulins, and carb counting for meals. I've been using abasaglar for my basal, and novarapid to bolus, although I'm currently trying out Fiasp as of yesterday. I'm also using the libre 2 - it's a godsend at times!

It's certainly been a tough few months, but slowly but surely I'm learning new things each day!

Hiya! if it's of any relevance I got to my 50 year diaversary last August - and still learn new things most days. The only caveat to that is when I was about 60, an older bloke my husband had known for years came out with that was one of the brilliant things about getting dementia, that because it meant you'd started to forget things, every thing and every body was new to you, so automatically more interesting! 😱 🙂

Don't worry though - it's kinda like learning to drive. When you first start it's a major thing to engage gear, release handbrake and move off then do it backwards when you stop and also have to steer and observe exactly what's happening all around you watching out for children playing and other road users and avoiding hazards ALL simultaneously - but it soon all becomes just habit really - and so it is with diabetes.

It sounds like you are in good hands, being offered alternative insulins and also getting access to Libre.
Let us know how you get on with FIASP.

Have you been offered a course such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) or equivalent. Not only was this a great course for learning how to carb count and manage sickness, it was also my first chance to meet others with T1. It was good to have a chance to chat about the practicalities of managing Day to day. At that time I was not aware of any forums such as this, which is also a great source of info and help.

Welcome to the forum @T1Sherwood 🙂

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but glad you've found us!

Living with T1 can be quite an isolating experience. Many of the T1s here are the only person in their family with the condition, and it can be hard for family and friends to really 'get it'. But we have literally centuries of lived T1 experience on the forum, from relative newbies, to those who have been pretending to be their own pancreas for decades - 30, 40, 50 years or more!

Asking a question here gives you access to suggestions and options from dozens of diabetes appointments all over the country, and many years of individual experimentation. What works for someone else may not work for you, but might give you some ideas to experiment with.

We are all facing the same frustrations, exhaustion, successes, disasters and moments of 'diabetes genius' elation that come along with juggling levels 24/7/365.

Welcome on board 🙂
