Welcome Sinead

Good that you found this forum so soon. Lots of people available to answer any questions that you have, and remember that there are no silly questions. Just ask.

Your amounts of insulin will gradually be changed to match what you need, and will then begin to settle a bit.

It is a lot to take in and the Ragnar Hanas book is a very useful and easy to follow, so don’t let the price put you off, it is well worth it. Someone likened the process of learning to manage our diabetes is a bit like learning to drive. At the start changing gear, steering, looking in the mirror, ... all seemed a lot to do, but then it becamoes automatic.

There are loads of people on here happy to help out, so just come back to us with any questions.

yes the finger pricking is horrible and it feels like every muscle tenses when I do it. I am quite worried about doing it and injections in public so that's the next hurdle. I love bread and chocolate so that's the first thing I need to work out the carbs of first!
I have just handed my notice in at work to go freelance so the timing isn't great ( not that there is good timing) and my family live in another city. It feels like all my big plans for Christmas and the new year will be effected by this discovery so I guess that's why I can't get my head around it all :(
but everyone on here is being so nice so its good to know when I feel rubbish and alone with it I can talk to someone 🙂
Going freelance is indeed a big change. However, some people with diabetes find self employment easier to manage than awkward employers.
I hope it's encouraging to say that I started on insulin in October / November (can't remember exactly when) and was staying with parents, having just returned from a year working overseas. No friends within 100 miles and pre mobile phones and internet, so had to rely on family landline phone (often monopolised by a semi-house trained teenage cousin!) and letters. So, getting away to visit friends at their homes or hostelling in Yorkshire Dales was a great relief. I spent Christmas with an uncle and aunt who lived on a smallholding on Normandy / Brittany border. Another friend, from Tasmania, was training to become a midwife in London and wanted to visit WWI battlefields in Belgium, so invited me, as I had more experience of travelling in mainland Europe, plus more French.
So, hopefully your friends will provide support and challenges.
