A YOUNG Easter Ross boy with diabetes will no longer have to inject himself with insulin up to five times a day when he becomes the first primary school child in the Highlands to be fitted with a special pump.

Nine-year-old Jack Ross from Invergordon, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes more than two years ago, will be the youngest local child to receive the diabetic pump from the NHS when it is fitted on Monday.

He and his mother Bexy of Ross Court are very excited about the prospect as it will cut out the need for injections and will make his diabetes easier to manage.

NHS Highland?s Paediatric Insulin Pump Service started in April and so far two patients, both older than Jack, have been started on the therapy.

One wonders if the pump has type 1 or 2 diabetes 🙄

Good news for the 9yr old 🙂🙂 Iwished they had them when i was young !

A bit rubbish that he's the first primary school child to get one when they've been around for so long... :( Still, good that things are changing in that respect, at least in Scotland 🙂

Not a huge population of primary school children in a geographically huge Highlands region. I would guess fewer than 100 primary school age children with T1D in Highlands? So, NHS would have to train / recruit trained medical / nursing staff to deal with pump before one could be issued. Anyway, good to hear he's getting the right treatment now.
