At risk of diabetes
Hi, I found out yesterday my count had gone up from 42m/mol to 46 so it's obviously not heading in the right direction. I have a colostomy and quite a few things still upset my stomach so I'm a little worried about trying new foods.

Welcome to the forum
Good that you have not yet crossed that threshold but enough to take some action.
Difficult when there are certain food which you may struggle with but have a look at this link as you may find their suggestions for meal ideas are suitable for you. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Hi @RuHu and welcome to the forum.
To make things clear I will assume that you know nothing about controlling Type 2 diabetes using food.

Us Type 2 diabetics are unable to handle the amount of carbohydrates in the modern diet. All carbohydrates digest into glucose (a sugar) which goes into our bloodstream to give us energy, but causes nasty complications if it stays there in too large a quantity.

In general it is only all sugars (including fruit juice) and all starches (including so called 'healthy' grains) which we have to be careful of. Unless we have other conditions we don't need to avoid Proteins (such as red meat, fish, eggs) or fats such as fatty fish, fatty meat, full fat cheese, high fat cream and other high fat dairy, and nuts. We can also eat most above ground veg, but need to be careful of potato (including sweet potato), parsnip as well as grains and flour made from grains. Tropical fruit is also in the 'best avoided' list as is all sweet fruit juice.

Thank you. I do have raised cholesterol that also needs attention before that gets to high.

Many find that adopting a low carbohydrate dietary regime their cholesterol improves.
Not just many, probably the majority of T2D's cholesterol improves on Low Carb. Practically all see better HDL and Triglycerides. And even those who have always been slim (like me) who don't see lower LDL still see better Lipid ratios overall!

Hi, once adapted the lower carb approach tends to have a less inflammatory effect on the gut. So here hoping it’s a blessing in that department

Welcome to the forum @RuHu 🙂

Sorry to hear your HbA1c has nudged up a little :(

Hope it isn’t too disheartening, especially if you’ve been making some changes to your lifestyle already, and they haven’t had the effect you were hoping for.

Have you tried using a BG meter to check how your body is responding to different foods? Not all Drs recommend this, so you may have to self fund, but many members here find the information invaluable for fine-tuning your menu.

You can take a reading immediately before eating, and again 2hrs after the first bite. By comparing the two reading you can see how much the meal has increased your BG levels - ideally you’d want to aim for a ‘meal rise’ of 2-3mmol/L or less.

If you need to self fund your BG meter, the most affordable meters members here have found are the SD Gluco Navii or the Spirit Tee2 - which both have test strips at around £10 for 50

I was waiting for my next appointment with the doctor before I purchased a bg meter.
I wasn't really surprised it increased as I hadn't tried that hard to change my diet - a week of healthy eating here and there. But I've now had a word with myself saying the NHS didn't spend all that money on two operations, chemo and radiotherapy so I could then ruin my health by eating chocolate and biscuits! I have made a note of the two meters and will research after the doctors appointment.
Thank you

You may be lucky in that your doctor may prescribe one since you also have to cope with another medical condition which restricts your options for food.
