HI @PeteT and welcome to the forum. I'm a fellow type 2 and can't tolerate breadcrumbs myself, but as we are all different some people may be able to. I suggest you use your monitor just before you eat some and then 2 hours afterwards. If there is only a couple of units between before and after, then you are probably ok with them.

It's a real nuisance when you waste the strips, I've done it myself lots!

What was your hba1c when you were diagnosed? And are you on any medication or controlling it by diet alone?

Hi Pete and wecome
Even without the shakes I find I have to grip my wrist in my other hand to ensure I aim the blood spot in the right direction onto the strip.
I also find it helps enormously to have a good sized blob ready: too often my meter says “not enough blood”!

I have just made us what I have called Christmas Crumble. I used up the ham, turkey, added parsnip, carrot and Brussel sprouts and fried with garlic and fresh herbs and the remains of the gravy. Topped with pandora breadcrumbs I still ended up with just 25g of carbs. A very yummy meal.

For us there are very few foods that are a no no but we just adjust our portions to make sure we stay under 30g of carbs at each meal. I round the Pandora bread crumbs are a lot easier to limit the amount by shaking out. Through testing I did learn that for me porridge was a no no. It sent my levels high straight away, so those have gone off our diet.

We each need to find what works for us

When you do your tests, do you get the drop of blood first, then insert the strip into the machine, wait for it to be ready and then apply the blood?
If you are putting the strip into the machine first you could easily run out of time to apply the blood.

Welcome to the forum @PeteT 🙂

Hi @Drummer I have 4 meters and if they go off whilst trying to test apply it anyhow and the machine
will become active straight away and give a reading.

Not saying that`s always the case but it is for me.

Hello @PeteT and welcome to the forum. Sounds as if you made a great start with things, but sometimes good to introduce changes gradually to let your system adjust.
Regarding the Panko, as @Vonny says it's a matter of trial and error on many foods to see what foods cause your blood sugars to rise.
They are a no no for me as well, if I want a bread-like topping on something I usually use a mix of ground almonds with a few seeds and some flavourings.
I hope you find a way of making the testing work out better and hope that you will keep posting and ask any questions and let us know how things are going
