Hi everyone..wanted to introduce myself..my daughter lauren 29 has been recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes..which was a real shock as no diabetes in the family..lauren has downs syndrome and has a underactive thyroid also..which I believe makes diabetes even more probable for her...we had a very scary time as went into hospital to be checked over as very unwell..temperature...stomach pains..lost weight ..but not the thirst..or loo visits!!...on arrival at hospital she was checked over only to find her bloods were 29!!!! And ketones 9!!! We was whizzed straight round to A&E and I can not thank them enough on how quick they reacted to the situation and got Lauren into safe levels...after reading some of the messages on here about how poorly some people have felt when their ketones were less than 3 it makes me realise just how poorly Lauren was....anyway that's my life story..sorry to rabble on..but thought it best I give some background rather than just saying hello!!

HI @Lyn54 welcome to the forum. How is Lauren doing now?
Hi lucy..she has recovered very well to be honest considering how poorly she was...she is happy and back smiling and that makes me happy...just gettin to grips with everythin..felt very overwhelmed with it all to start off with..but gettin my head round it all now thank you x

That’s good news. It’s a shock isn’t it, and DKA seems to appear so quickly and suddenly you find yourself in the midst of an emergency and all the stress that brings and then its topped off with a lifelong diagnosis too - overwhelming it definitely is!
Yes there is lots to learn and be prepared for diabetes to throw you the odd curve ball too, sometimes you can get results you weren’t expecting with no rhyme or reason. It sounds as though the hospital have been really good and do get in touch with them as often as you need to, they will be a life line while you’re learning how different things effect Lauren’s readings. It should get easier for you both and I’m sure you’ll get lots of support on here too, do ask anything you need to at any time or even just just get things off your chest if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Keep us updated with how its all going.

Thank you lucy...its comforting to know I can either just sound off on here or get lots of information on it all...and very comforting to know your not alone ..thank you for the replies and information i really do appreciate it all xx

Lyn - you are always welcome to do exactly that - there are NO silly questions! We've all felt 'lost alone and unloved' at times I'm pretty certain - so do speak up when you need to for heaven's sake.

Hi lyn and welcome to the forum. This must be hard for you, but don't worry it will get better.
You should be so proud of what you are and will continue to do for Lauren and I am glad you are getting to grips with it. If you have any questions feel free to ask away.

Hi and welcome. What a shock. I’m glad she’s bounced back quickly. We’re here to support you as well as help with info so feel free to share whatever is comfortable for you.

Thank you for your reply...I am slowly gettin to grips with it all...sometime in the future I would hope lauren may be able to manage her levels herself..but that's somewhere in the future x

Hi and welcome. It is a huge shock and scary time, plus huge amounts of info. My daughter (16) was diagnosed on 1st May and I have type 1 as well. I am finding it alot to take on board and I should already know what I am doing. Be kind to yourself and remember we are all here and have your back.

Well exactly, see - treating your own diabetes is hard enough without having to treat someone else's too. There are many many of us who have simply never needed to do it - and goodness knows being a parent is flippin hard enough to begin with even without medical problems - so give yourself a pat on the back having got this far and retaining your own sanity and health!

There's wonderful technology out there to help with this, there is libre a flash glucose monitoring system that she should be able to trail for 6 months. Let us know how you get on and keep us updated on yourself and Lauren.

Welcome to the forum @Lyn54

Sounds like you are doing a great job of supporting your daughter.
