Also:confused: if he has diagnosed me will I get my prescriptions free although I am not taking any medication I am so confused. I still have to see the dietician and the diabetic nurse and the education class at the hospital

Just wanted to welcome you to the site!:DBev

Hello and welcome to the forum Carrotstick , I am type 1 but as far as i know once a Diabetic always a Diabetic. Has the doctor actually confirmed that you are definately Diabetic if your levels are not very high? Have you had all the classic symptoms ? thirst , weight loss etc ?

Hi carrotstick, welcome to the forum🙂 Diabetes is not a straightforward condition - it can be quite possible to keep blood sugar levels under control through a combination of diet and exercise - many, many people with Type 2 achieve this so don't despair!

Any questions you may have will be welcome, so please ask away!🙂

Thanks for the welcome Bev I am sure someone will know. You know what its like in a surgery you have all these questions..........................

Yes my GP confirmed I was diabetic. I had no symptoms I just had my usual hypertension test and the blodd sugar was high well 9.7. I then had the GTT test which was 8.4 then 8.6 after the 2 hours. I feel fine.

Oh sorry to hear that , I thought there might have been still an element of doubt . Well lots of type 2's can manage levels with a healthy eating and exersise regime so you dont necessarily have to go on meds . have you been given a glucose testing meter so you caan test your levels and see what effect different foods have on you? if not ask your doctor or diabetes nurse for one. any questions or queries you have someone will be able to help or advise , dont worry. 🙂

Welcome to the forum. It is all very confusing initially, just give yourself some time to take it all in, he's a good place to start! If you've got the dietician, diabetic nurse and an education course sorted then it looks like you're getting good support which is half the battle won.

There isn't so mucha cure for diabetes, but it can be controlled, and for many type 2s without medication by adopting eating and exercise changes.

Diabetics on medication for their diabetes (eg insulin or tablets) get free prescriptions but at the moment those diet and exercise controlled do not, the theory I think being that they are not prescribed things for their condition, but that of course fails to take into account things like blood testing strips etc.

hi Carrot I am pretty much in the same boat as you. I was diagnosed last sept and am diet and exercise controlled. I do take medication for high BP and also a statin. I dont think you can beat it although you can control sugars with diet and exercise although I do believe that in some cases this doesnt work forever and diabetes medication is needed. AS Aymes says you cant get free prescriptions as no medication is actually being given for the diabetes but you can get free eye tests. You should also be given appointments to see a nutritionist and for a retinal eye scan at the very least. I also went to a couple of group classes - which was basically diabetes education at my GP's.

ASk away about anything you need on here. You will find that what works for one might not work for another in terms of what foods to eat and its a learning process in the beginning. I've also started reading Gretchen Bakers book Type 2 Diabetes - the first year - everything you need to know - you can get it from Amazon - its brilliant and makes things a lot clearer.

Hope this helps!
