I'm new to having metformin and insulin and I have a question. I have a birthday coming up soon and I was wondering would I be okay to have a drink on my birthday to celebrate or not

The answer is yes but don't go mad. Depending upon your tipple, alcohol can raise your BG or drop it... Carby drinks like beer and cider will raise it initially but if you have a binge session, you might hypo later. Dry wine and spirits (with or without low calorie mixers) may drop your levels slightly, so again you could hypo. The advice would be to go steady and possibly have a snack or food with or afterwards and test more frequently at least until you understand how your body responds to alcohol.
Hope you manage to enjoy your birthday in whatever way the current restrictions allow.

Yes, just be sensible and remember that when the liver is busy eliminating alcohol it can't deliver emergency glucagon if you go hypo so keep an eye on BS.

Not only can't it deliver emergency glucagon - it will also lower your BG - so DO be very careful !

what about a non alcohol drink i used to drink then changed to non alcohol. i am surprised that as a t2 they are prescribing both metformin and insulin usually if medications fail then often people will then go on to insulin. my meds failed and i went on to insulin for a while but then some other meds were found to work with me.

Most non alcohol especially (wine drinks) are very high in sugar so more carbs involved, I
see there is a non alcohol gin out now but have no idea about the ingredients. Just be
sensible check your BGL`s every hour and respond accordingly, if you are drinking spirits
have slimline drinks with them or water and always drink a glass of water every hour.

If you drink lager or beers do not have export or strong ales of any sorts and don`t forget
to eat something with every, drink doesn`t have to be much a biscuit will do.

Most of all enjoy your birthday and any drinks and food left over PM me and I`ll give you
my address to send it to.🙂

I have a question what happens when I have got my BG under 10 do I come off of the insulin and metformin I've not been told anything really. Thanks for any help you can give me

No way you get medical advice first, in no way are we medically trained except for
@mikeyB as far as I know, our advice is just that advice, please be careful when
altering your medication and only do it with a HCP`s advice please promise us?

Yes I am but she only works in the week and its the weekend so thought I would ask here, thanks for you answers though

I think that will depend @Steverpayne. We have had members in the past who have come off insulin, or only been on it temporarily, but for others it continues to be useful, and helps them manage their BG levels, so it makes sense to keep going with it.

But certainly a good question to ask. Hope you manage to get hold of your nurse this week.
