hi all i have been given a new meter to try (accu-check aviva expert)from out diabetes team as we are "ready to carb count" lol.
Something is baffling us though, its a great unit don't get me wrong.......

Time offset: what is this? ours is set to 1 hour is this correct?
we are on novorapid (day) and levimir (night).

1 hour after testing him the monitor said there was 0.6u of active indulin left?
2 hour's after it said 0.4 ?

i'm a little confused and any help would be great :D thanks as ever

I really liked my Expert, but you are not the first to be baffled by 'active insulin'.

It's a bit of a mis-labelling really, it should say 'active correction'. It only tracks the 'correction' portion of the meal dose. Any insulin in a calculation which is assigned to carbs eaten will not be tracked.

As for 'offset time' that relates to the amount of time you would expect a dose to run before BGs begin to come down. It is used to help avoid correction errors in calculations where BGs are tested/corrections given soon after eating. There are graphs in the 'big' A4 type manual that show offset time and multiple doses working together.

Hope you get in well with it 🙂 it took me a while to tweak the settings by trial and error (6 months maybe?) but it did give me some very good weeks of levels when my basal was set right in the end

Would i tell the monitor when he's having a snack? ie: 10 carbs @2pm and would i use bolus adviser for insulin? sorry lol 😛

Yes, click the 'Bolus Advice' option, input the carbs and it will calculate the dose required. It's best to do this even if you can calculate the bolus yourself because then when it's working out averages or you download, it will show full info. But not a disaster if you don't!
