Hi, I have type 1, diagnosed in 1979 aged 8yrs. I am married with four children and work as a midwife. I am being offered an insulin pump and would like to ask members for your advice on which pump to choose? I have been offered the Roche combo, the animas vibe or the Medtronic paradigm. I notice the animas will work with continuous glucose monitoring, but don't know if my trust will fund that? Has anyone any experience or advice they could offer me? Many thanks

Hi Emma, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm not on a pump so can't advise on that, but we have many members who are so hopefully they will be along to help. I understand that the Medtronic also works with CGM, although getting funding under the NHS is extremely unlikely unless you are a child with pronounced difficulties. Have a look at http://www.input.me.uk/ for lots of good information about pumping 🙂

Welcome Emma Sarson.

You'll probably be spotted by some of our pumper members here, but also worth posting in Pumping section.

Someone was asking about applying for a midwifery course with type 1 diabetes recently, but I can't remember the details, and am just calling in quickly between jobs. Hopefully, someone will point you to the appropriate thread.

Hi Emma,

All insulin pumps are fantastic, so whichever you choose I'm sure you'll be pleased with it.

The Roche Combo comes with a separate handset, which is an advantage for those who prefer to keep their pump concealed under clothes and operate it remotely via the handset. On the other hand, the handset could be mislaid!

The Animas is the only pump that's waterproof (can be immersed), so it's a good choice if you're into watersports (except you can't scuba dive with it due to pressure changes). The other pumps must be detached for swimming etc.

The Medtronic Veo is the only pump which has a Low Suspend feature when used with CGMS - this is a very useful safety feature for nocturnal hypos where the person doesn't wake up (true of most children). If the sensor detects a low BG, the pump alarms and if no action is taken, it suspends insulin delivery.

CGMS is difficult to get funding for. The Medtronic and the Animas Vibe are both set up to work with CGMS, but you have to also buy or have funding for the transmitter (one off cost) and the sensors (consumables). You can also buy or get funding for a standalone CGMS such as the Dexcom. In our case, we had the option to buy a transmitter when my son got his first pump a few years ago (?750). We started off buying sensors for occasional use, and he now gets NHS funding for 10 per year. The sensors cost ?55 each and last 6 days, though some people restart them for another 6 days. If you have a supportive consultant you may be able to make a case for individual funding for sensors if they would help you with your shift work as a midwife - it's worth a shot!

Welcome to the forum Emma 🙂

Wow, thank you all so much for your replies. My consultant is supportive so I will discuss the funding with him. It would be great to know which direction my BG is moving in, I work on labour ward and sometimes I go 8 hours without a drink, let alone a break (illegal and I should insist and all that, but reality is different!) I work night and on calls also so maybe..... Thanks again for such a warm welcome.

Hi Emma,

A warm welcome to the forum
