Hello everyone.
I have only discovered last week I am diabetic.
Luckily I began a plant based diet a couple of weeks back and am managing to fit in some walking between my caring duties.
I eoukd appreciate it if someone could point me towards where there are any diet sheets available

Stuart

Hi @Stewpot@28 Stuart, and welcome to the forum 🙂

If you would be happy to share a little more about how you found this out, and what was recommended as a way of managing your diabetes - this can help us best support you. It's encouraging to hear you're finding the time to keep active 🙂

Regarding your question, we would like to let you know that whilst there is no reason why you shouldn’t choose to follow a plant-based diet if you wish, it is always important to discuss the matter with your diabetes team if you have any queries or concerns.

You may find the following article from our website useful for some further information (there are some recipes listed at the bottom of the page too): https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/veganism-and-diabetes

We're all here to help, and would always say that there's no question too small (and no such thing as a silly question)! Please do ask (ask, ask) away with any you may have 🙂

Hi.
Many thanks for your response.
I found your sight by simply googling you and glad I have.
I xhall certainly follow the links as ghe advice from my GP has left me confused.
I have a HbA1C of 53 yet she told me it's fine to eat things like Greek Yoghurt with a spoonful of honey added or cereal with fresh fruit, which I currently do.
I trust her but still find her advice confusing.
Stuart

Hi Stuart, you're welcome.

We're sorry to hear the advice from your GP has left you a bit confused. Things can be really overwhelming when you are first diagnosed, and we can appreciate this.

You could try to get some clarification from the GP if you have concerns or further questions about any advice you have been given.

As well as this, I wonder if you have come across the food-related thread yet on our forum?
It is a really good thread to help with any food- and diet-related questions 🙂

We have an article on cereals on our website, which could be useful for your information too: https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-t...iabetes/diabetes-food-myths/breakfast-cereals

We would say that people’s responses to foods can be individual. Your diet in the context of the contribution it makes to your overall health is important, choosing wholegrain carbs over more highly-processed carbs could be one example of a swap, as well as this, enjoying the food that you eat 🙂

53 isn't hugely high but certainly need to be taken seriously. Whilst there is nothing wrong with a plant based regime you nee to be carful about the amount of carbohydrates in your plant based foods as some can be quite high in carbs more so than meat, fish, eggs, cheese and dairy.
The suggestion of full fat Greek yoghurt and berries but with a scattering of a low sugar granola or seeds and nuts but certainly NOT with honey.
You may find some suitable ideas for meals in this link which is a low carb regime https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Internet search for low carb plant based recipes may give you some ideas.
Many who go with a low carb approach try to keep their carb intake to no more than 130g per day as a good starting point.
Where you are on the diabetes ladder means there is a good change you can pull it back with dietary changes without medication.

She clearly believes unsweetened yoghurt is unpalatable without sweetening - whereas natural ie unenhanced full fat Greek yog most certainly isn't - though I have to say, if you do need it sweeter it's bloomin gorgeous with a teaspoon of decent honey, but I absolutely stress ONLY a teaspoon! and don't mix it all in and DO NOT lick the spoon!

For me otherwise, you can stick the honey, which is a shame if you're a bee keeper, cos they (ie the bees) are wonderful assets for us all to have.

Welcome to the forum @Stewpot@28 (”It’s Friday… it’s five to five…” etc)

I wonder if your Dr was trying to describe the sort of breakfast that some members here find can work well for them?

Rather than a bowl full of cereal with a dollop of yoghurt (which can have quite a hefty carb load), some forum members base their breakfast on a bowl of creamy Greek yoghurt, with some frozen or fresh berries, and then a sprinkle of granola or cereal on top to keep the crunch. This changes the proportions of the components and can lead to a lower BG rise.

As @Ciara DUK says - responses to foods can be vary widely from person to person, so while one may find high fibre cereal or porridge gives them a nicely gentle BG ‘bump’ and keeps them feeling full all morning for others (I am in the latter camp) they may as well be eating a bowl of jam 😱 Weetabix was shown to be a particularly disastrous choice for me by post-meal checks. No idea why! Perhaps it’s the mashed and minced nature of the grains in the bisk?

Some people’s bodies don’t seem to have read the memo on ’slow release carbs’ and break them down super-speedily. So you might treat all these suggestions as a useful guide, but not a guarantee. Many folks here find it helpful to have a BG meter to experiment with sources of carbs and portion sizes until they find what works for them personally.

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂

Thank you for the advice. I tried 120g of the Greek Yoghurt with a half dozen raspberries and found it delicious.
Yes. I am old enough uo remember Stewpot. I used love laying in bed on Saturday mornings listening to Junior choice.

And - what a lovely bloke, cos I'm a bit older than you and in one of my young adult pursuits because we'd both been temporary employees of a geezer who ran events, when he started featuring some Radio 1 DJs, we could get free entry if we happened to fancy seeing whoever (same with various other artists and groups) but THE nicest one of the whole lot of them was a Scot, Stuart Henry. An absolute Gentle Man.

I could just eat that!
