Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everybody - new to the group, thanks for accepting my request to join. I'm Type 2, managed to stay off meds for a few years but had to start metformin recently due to increase in sugar levels and lack of losing the pounds. Would rather not take them but hopefully I can lose some weight and either stop taking them or at least reduce them plus my BP tabs as well.
Looking forward to meeting people in the group.
Thanks JA

Hi JANeedtoloseweight, welcome to the forum.

Glad that you've found us as it really can help to be part of a support network. You mentioned being able to stay off of the meds for a while, was there any significant thing that changed as to why your sugar levels increased?

I ask as it's often a few tweaks that can get a person back on track and if you've been doing well before then it may be a good time to have a look at what worked well and whether you can expand on that.

We've got some helpful info on the forum and on our main site so do have a look around and let us know if we can help in any way.

Hi thanks for the reply - I was diagnosed a few years ago by a blood test I have for meds I take for BP. No symptoms etc
Told to lose weight and my yearly test have always been about the same no higher slightly lower sometimes.
Offered meds a few times but chose to keep trying to lose the pounds and exercise . I have lost but gained etc
During Covid no tests so when I eventually had them done it was higher . Refused meds again but after a year more ir less the same so decided to start on Metformin .
Never had much advice from surgery on diets what to eat although I do basically know what to eat. They did give me a Diabetes UK booklet which is why I joined . Never tested my sugars at home as told didn’t need to. I did buy a machine last year when following Second Nature recommended by another member so results were quite high but managed to get them down . This week have all been in the 9’s and 8.7 one day first thing in the morning .
First lot of meds gave me heartburn so now swapped for slow release ones fingers crossed I don’t get it again .
Thanks

Have you also been looking at your carbohydrate intake as that is going to have an impact on your blood glucose level. If you are having more than your body can tolerate even with the medication then your blood glucose will be unlikely to come down.
Many find a low carbohydrate approach is successful, that being no more than 130g per day total carbs. However as you have a monitor you could do some strategic testing of some of your meals to see how well tolerated they are. Testing before you eat and after 2 hours will indicate the meal was ok if the increase was no more than 2-3mmol/l. The more consistently you can keep within those parameters the more likely you are to see a reduction in blood glucose.
Home testing is one of the most powerful tools to help manage your condition.

HI - when I am really trying to lose some weight and lower my blood sugars I do reduce my carbs. I have lost in the past but keep falling off the wagon so to speak. Just looking at the various diets on this website and was wondering which one people have done and if they have been successful.
Thanks

I followed the principal in this link as it made perfect sense, meat, fish, eggs, dairy, veg and salads.

I'm not a follow to the letter diet person but looked at the carbs for foods and found substitutes which kept me to my chosen carbs per day.

Hi thanks I will take a look. I like one that shows all the carbs etc - I really don't like counting calories
