Relationship to Diabetes
At risk of diabetes
Hello there,
I am waiting for Diabetes to grab me, both birth parents have it and I had gestational high blood sugars, my last fasting blood test showed results in the higher end. I'm looking for support and making contact with Diabetes survivors; I am worrying about the diet, I have a lot of allergies so it's all looking overwhelming to me at the moment.

Hi, and welcome to the forum, I am not about diets, but I am sure others here can point you in the correct direction.

making contact with Diabetes survivors
I'm a diabetes thriver not a survivor.
When I was diagnosed I was morbidly obese and had sleep apnea, acid reflux, hypertension as well as the need to pee every 10 minutes along with T2.
It was the kick up the butt I needed to change my diet dramatically and kick diabetes into touch along with all the other conditions.
Cut out almost all carbohydrates and began time restricted eating, lost weight all the other conditions healed and was in remission from T2 within 4 months without really much effort.

I look upon my diagnosis as a positive thing.

Hi and welcome!

Have you spoken to your GP about your concerns? I'm wondering if you may be eligible for the NHS Healthier You course if you are in the UK, and I think that comes with dietician support, so you could ask them for personalised dietary advice.

Do you have any weight to lose? If so, and you can manage that and keep it off, that may be enough to delay or prevent diabetes (assuming that it is type 2 that your parents had).

Alternatively you could look to reduce the amount of carbohydrates in your diet, and if you don't want to lose weight replace the calories from them with some from proteins & fats that you aren't allergic to. I won't suggest any specific swaps as I don't know what you are allergic to or what you usually eat! If you keep a food diary for a few days including noting the total carbohydrate content, then you could maybe try to identify ways to reduce carbohydrates by maybe a third. Often people reduce to under 130g if type 2 or pre-diabetic, but that may not be necessary. Do you know if you had an HbA1c done along with the fasting blood glucose? That would help you to decide how much you might need to change your lifestyle to reduce your diabetes risk. 41 mmol/l and under is normal, 42 to 47 is pre-diabetic, and over 48 is diabetic level.

When you know whether you have an actual diagnosis and where you are in the range you will get an idea of how much you need to do to keep on track.
However this link will give you some ideas for meals that should fit in with family life. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
