Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all,

I was diagnosed with t2 about 10 ywars ago via a random blood test. Not particularly overweight, not experiencing any symptoms, under 40 and no relatives with diabetes.

BS have always been under control even through two pregnancies. Hba1c has consistently been around the 50 mark. Result this week however was a massive leap to 93. I have lost weight since my last check and all other readings are the best theyve ever been. I was even retested as the practice nurse thought the results must have been mixed. But no, its correct.

Am well and truly floored by it tbh

Hello Louise, and welcome 🙂

Sorry to hear about the leap in your HbA1c - I'm baffled by it as well, I'm afraid. If you were a recently diagnosed type 2 I'd think perhaps you'd been misdiagnosed and really had type 1, especially given the weight loss, but that seems unlikely after 10 years.

Just bumping this up for you in the hope that someone else will see it and hopefully have some helpful ideas.

Hi, with your weight loss, do you think you are eating more but feeling like you are not getting the energy into your body from the foods ?

Hi Louise. Welcome to our friendly forum. Sorry to hear about the sudden leap in your Hb1ac, what a shock for you.

Was your weight loss planned or did it just seem to happen.

Before I read the replies by Juliet and Derek my first thoughts were that you don't have T2, but one of the other flavours of Diabetes.
What was the result of the previous Hb1ac

Having said that over time through no fault of the person, T2 can slowly get worse so needing more treatment.

Apologies for all the questions, it's just that we need a bit more info to be able to help you.

Hi Louise a warm welcome to the forum

Thank you so much for the responses and welcomes - very much appreciated.

The weight loss was partly accidental. I was ill with a chest infection and so my calorie intake did drop for those 3 weeks and afterwards I was monitoring more closely the snacks I have - namely chocolate. Ive dropped about 1.5 stones.

My last hba1c was 6.7 so a massive increase and yet no change to diet. I have actually been more active too.

I currently take 2 500mg metformin twice a day and 50mg sitigliptin. All that has been suggested is an additional tablet - glimapiride at 2mg
