Started new Insulin Injection today with high hopes.
Oh dear,
Now using ABASAGLAR.Long lasting Insulin using new type pen. Did my first injection 10 units as instructed at 0800 this morning
Had Breakfast of Scrambled eggs and half a tin of Tuna. No bread etc. Coffee with Soya milk.
Bloods soon started to go up on my Abbott reader. 13.4 by Lunch time. Lunch Turkey 3 small potatoes , lots of veg.
No Gravey. Bloods continued to rise to 19 by 1330. Slowly coming down. Now at 14.2 ...Time 1720.
This does not seem good.
Any suggestions please

What were you on before? Having a quick flip back through your posts, you mention Human Isophane at one point. If so, it could be that this older insulin has a less flat profile than Abasalgar, so you were getting more up front, in the first 6-8 hours, which may have helped with any rise in the morning. Abasalgar has a longer lasting action, spread out more over 16-24 hours (it’s supposed to last 24 hrs, but some people do say it runs out early for them)
Are you in touch with whoever prescribed it, or do you have a Diabetes nurse you can contact? It might be the case that they will advise you to increase the dose slowly, until it works as you want it.

They’ve probably started you on a conservative dose @TonyB a d will increase it gradually if needed. If you keep good notes of what you eat and your blood sugar, that will help them make adjustments.

Hi
Yes I have been on Isophand for some time but it was not lasting long enough to cover the evening meal.
Saw the Diabetes nurse on Friday. She suggested 10 units of the new Insulin but I might need to reduce it.
That dont seem likely. I do think 19 was the hight reading I have had in over a year.
Perhaps tomorrow will be better. Eggs and Mushrooms for breakfast

Another option would be to go back to the isophane if that was working for you, and simply add in a small dose of fast-acting insulin to cover your evening meal @TonyB

I find Abasaglar doesn't cover mealtime rises, although of course it's not supposed to. I started on six units and gradually increased it, but I didn't see much effect on morning rises until I got over 20 units. I also split it because it didn't seem to last the full 24 hours.
Like inka said, you might be better off with some fast acting to cover your meals?

Hope you can find an insulin system that works for you @TonyB

I think a long-acting-only insulin regime only works as a sort of ‘background support’, and relies on your home grown insulin to be released to mop up the meals?

now I am getting worried. Everything I put in my mouth seems to raise my sugars.
Woke up with a 10.2. Highest ever for a wake up reading . Small breakfast no bread up to 12.6. Lunch Salad up to 13.6. Nothing since 1300 and now at 1715 its at 10.5 Cannot even think of eating any dinner about 1800.

Do you have any of the previous insulin you were using so you could swap back when your next dose is due to see if that helps or try a new pen as the one you are using could be compromised.
But you need to contact your nurse/GP/clinic asap.

You have eggs and tuna for breakfast?!! Sorry but that's an amazing breakfast. I don't see anything there that will affect your blood sugar and the dosage of Abasaglar is clearly wrong and your HBS was nothing to do with either the eggs or the tuna, no carbohydrate was harmed in the making of that breakfast. Do contact your nurse/GP/clinic.
