Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi I’m Nicky , I’m 45. signed up today as feel pretty alone and still learning about my type 1, still trying to understand lots as I became diabetic due to having my pancreas removed I’d love to chat to any one to share any of your own personal issues or I’m happy to discuss all what’s went in with myself xxx

Hi Nicky and welcome.

I believe you are actually Type 3c diabetic if you have had your pancreas removed so it may be helpful if you can change that option in your profile to give people a clearer indication of the different issues you may experience and give more appropriate advice. It is important that you are treated like a Type 1 diabetic by your health care professionals so that you have access to education and technology to help you manage your BG levels well, so I understand why you would have chosen the Type 1 option but here on the forum we are mostly enlightened enough to know what Type 3c involves whereas some HCPs have never even heard of the classification, so Type 1 makes it easier for them to understand.

How long ago was your surgery and have you needed insulin since then or have you managed to scrape by with a bit of home produced stuff since then. Which insulin(s) have they given you and how are you managing with them? We all know it is pretty overwhelming to start with but I can assure you that it does get easier. Do you also use Creon?

Feel free to tell us a bit more about your story. It is always interesting to learn of different people's experiences. @eggyg is our most regular 3c contributor and I am sure she will be along now I have tagged her to say hello too.

If you have anything particular you are having difficulty with, please ask and we will do our best but be assured that there is no need to feel alone when you are part of this great diabetic community. Reach out to us whenever you need to.....
You might like to contribute to our https://forum.diabetes.org.uk/boards/threads/group-7-day-waking-average.20148/page-3768#post-1084260 thread on a regular basis. It is a bit like a virtual coffee morning where we post our waking BG reading (the weekly average part mentioned in the thread title is mostly overlooked these days) and share a bit of information about our plans for the day or frustrations/happiness with our readings, the weather and/or general chat/TV/sport/news etc. Don't try to read it from the start, just jump straight in with your morning reading each day and you will soon get the hang of it and get to know us a bit better. Hope to see you there tomorrow.

Anyway, good to have you on board and hope you find the advice and support as helpful as I have over the past couple of years.

Hi there @Highlandcroft and welcome to the forum!

I'm sorry to hear you're feeling a little bit alone but you've definitely come to the right place.

As @rebrascora has said please feel free to tell us more about your story if you feel comfortable to do so and don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have (there's no such thing as stupid questions when it comes to diabetes)!

Someone is always around if you need anything 🙂

Hi,

You definitely have come to the right place. I have been type 1 for two years but am only coming to terms with it now and in this past couple of weeks it is thanks to these lovely people on the forum that I'm making progress.
I've started documented my journey on a thread called Me and My Diabetes, if you want to have a read.

Welcome to the forum @Highlandcroft . Very pleased that you have found us,

I encourage you to ask any questions that you have. We have a few Type 3c on here, and I will leave them to give you the specifics around that. However a diagnosis comes about, it is a shock and takes a bit of getting used to. There is a lot to learn very quickly, but managing everything does get easier. The best analogy I was given was that it is like learning to drive. It all seems complicated at the start but then so much of it becomes automatic.

A book I found useful is Type1 Diabetes in Children, adolescents and young adults by Ragnar Hanas. Ignore the age reference (I was diagnosed at 53) and the chapter on starting school. Whilst I know that you are 3C much of the diabetes side is the same as for T1.

fire away with absolute any questions that arise and we will help in any way that we can.

Welcome to the forum @Highlandcroft

Yikes! Having your whole pancreas out must have been quite an ordeal! How long ago was your surgery?

I assume you must also need to take Creon?

As others have said, we have a fair few with various versions of pancreatic surgery or chronic pancreatitis on the forum, so you will have lots to compare notes with (as well as all the vanilla T1s) 😛
