Hi David, welcome to the forum, a good place to be for advice and help.

Welcome to the forum David 🙂

Like the nickname ? are you a Genesis fan? 🙂

As others have already said, this forum is a great resource.

Hi David, welcome to the forum 🙂 Have you been diagnosed long? I would recommend reading our Useful links thread, in particular Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter. Also the book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker is an excellent introduction.

Please let us know if you have any questions and we will do our best to help! 🙂

Thank you for the references to read. I was diagnosed with type 2 about a year ago and have been trying to get by but thought it would be good to read some advise.

My problem is that my sugar level is permanently high so I need to keep away from sugar as much as possible. I find it difficult when the rest of the family are eating cakes and all sorts of sweet things

Yes a big fan of Genesis - my favourite band and my nickname is my favourite song of theirs

You need to bear in mind that it is not just sweet and sugary items you need to avoiid if you want to get your levels down, you need to consider ALL carbohydrates, like potatoes, cereals, bread, pasta, rice - sugar is simply a form of carbs that will raise your blood sugar levels very quickly. White bread will actually raise your levels even faster due to the chemical processes involved. I think a lot of the time we think of sugar as the thing to avoid because we use the term 'blood sugar', but really it should be 'blood glucose', and all carbs will convert to glucose.

It's not helpful that your family aren't being more supportive by joining you in a diet that would be healthier for your diabetes, but they should as it would also do them a power of good! What advice have you been given by your GP or nurse? Have you seen a dietician? It is hard at first to cut down on some of these foods because they are addictive in nature - particularly the things that convert to glucose quickly - but it is possible. You could try sugar-free jelly and nuts for snacks instead of the sweet stuff and crisps. Your tastes will change and you will no longer crave the sweet stuff.

Another point is that, because your levels are permanently high you body can't actually cope and can't get the energy it needs from your food, it's a bit of a vicious circle. By breaking that circle you can improve your levels and reduce your cravings 🙂 Perhpas you'd like to give us an idea of the kinds of things you eat generally? You don't have to, of course, but people here would be able to offer some good suggestions for possible improvements 🙂

A warm welcome to you 🙂

From one newbie to another, advice already given will no doubt be very beneficial to you. As I'm come to discover from advice given here, not as simple as just cutting out sweets / cakes, etc. Every food source needs to be considered in relation to what it does to your blood sugar.

Can recommend all the reading matter that is suggested and soak up all you can from the forum - some fantastic advice & support available !
