Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Good morning to everyone out there, never been on a message board before but niether had i had diabetes type 2 before December 2009 either so alot of firsts for me. I am not coping well with the diagnosis of this illness and apart from a few small changes to diet and lifestyle have tried to carry on prety much as normal the only people who know i'm diabetic are my wife & children and my manager at work & he only knows because i do a safety critical job which requires a yearly medical + random alchol & drugs testing.

Have been on this website a few times and thought it maybe easier to talk to other people who are in the same situation as me, i've been taking 1 x 500g metaformin a day since diagnosed and in november 2010 was also put on to
1 x simvastatin (40g). I'm hoping that will be it and that i never need to go onto injections as i have a total fear of needles (i know "Wimp") so hopefully keeping up the diet and regular excercise i will be able to beat this but i know it won't be easy.

Had my Hba1c done a few days ago waiting on results and have a clinic appointment soon to see the podiatrist the dietician etc so will let you know how i get on,

Bye for now

Wilko

Good morning Wilko. welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear that you are having problems coming to terms with your diagnosis. This is not unusual - it is a very big thing to take in, after all, and life-changing. Can you remember what your last HbA1c was? Do you have a meter to test your levels? If so, what sort of numbers do you wake up to in the morning? If you haven't got a meter, I'd highly recommend it, so that you can establish what foods have a good or bad effect on your levels.

Have a look at the links in our 'Useful Links' thread for some good reading on how to deal with your diabetes. Even though you have been diagnosed for a while, I'd recommend getting a copy of the Gretchen Becker book -it will really help you to understand your diagnosis and how best to manage it.

Diabetes is an awful thing to be diagnosed with, but the good news is that it can be managed very successfully with current treatment options - and these are improving all the time. You are not alone in this - there are 300 million of us in the world, so don't worry about others knowing - it's quite possible they have it also! You will find lots of very friendly and supportive people here so please ask anything that is worrying you or confusing you - nothing is considered 'silly'. We will do our best to help. 🙂 Hope your appointments go well - I will look forward to hearing more from you!

Hi Wilko and welcome to the forum. 🙂

Diabetes, in all its forms, can be a difficult thing to accept but the good news is that it is manageable, as demonstrated by the members on this forum. Hopefully, once you accept that it isn't going to kill you immediately and that life can actually proceed quite normally, you will have the capacity to learn more about the condition and how to live with it, rather than in spite of it.

Ask loads of questions and be prepared for surprisingly normal, yet interesting tales from fellow diabetics. Remember, no question is silly here :D

Hi Wilko and welcome to the forum.

See Northerner has already mentioned the meter to you, cannot recommend it highly enough so go get one if you dont already have one.

Hi Wilco and welcome to the forum.

Donna 🙂

hi Wilko..... welcome to the forum. when I was diagnosed in January this year I didn't know anyone with diabetes..... but once I mentioned it to people I discovered lots of people have it (and offer advice.... 🙂 )

we are all friendly here.... some of us newly diagnosed and finding it difficult to come to terms with..... and some have had it for many years. so there is a wide spectrum of people. I've found that no matter what my question is there is always someone able to answer it

looking forward to 'chatting' :D
