Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hello everyone, I'm Col,
I have been type 1 since I was a teenager. I have resisted 'being' diabetic, and haven't got involved. I have managed to get this far, not accepting the help of the professionals around me, and not moving with the times. Eventually it starts to catch up with you, and I'm finally trying to engage in a way that will hopefully improve my control and prevent complications. I feel like I'm starting from scratch, new technology, new management plans, new insulin. Currently using Levemir/Fiasp- (fiasp is brand new to me this week) and Metformin to improve my insulin resistance. My consultant has provided me my first Libra, and I have bought my second- it is showing me things I would never have guessed were happening. Any guidance and advice, will be happily received

Hi mrcogs, welcome to the forum 🙂 There's a wealth of knowledge here so whatever your questions you should be able to get some answers 🙂 The Libre is great 🙂 What insulin were you on before the Fiasp, and what was the reason for the change?

Hi Northerner,
I had been on NovoRapid for a long time, for me there seems to be a disconnect between eating and my insulin actually working, I have had significant peaks immediately after eating, followed by rapid drops, hopefully I will start to get somewhere in controlling this soon

Hello and welcome @mrcogs , glad you've joined us 🙂

I've found there can be an assumption that because you've dealt with diabetes for a long time and are managing you should be aware of new tech and new insulins and improvements can pass you by. There is so much good tech around now that really can make such an improvement to managing diabetes.

Do you pre bolus at all for meals to give the Novorapid time to get to work so it's more in sync with glucose starting to rise from eating? I didn't use to do this but since joining this forum it's one of the best things I've learnt to do to try and prevent spikes and dips after meals. It does take a bit of practice with the timing and definitely start with caution just to see if that will help iron your levels out a bit. The Libre /cgm is great for showing how any tweaks are working.

Welcome Col. The Libre is so good. The info off them is mind blowing 24hrs a day ? 🙂

Hi @mrcogs

I think I toddled along quite happily thinking I knew most things before I discovered this forum. I think the professionals didn’t suggest any new things to me either, because they presumed the same.

The libre definitely helps and I now wonder how I managed without it. I had heard about it, but it was reading the experiences of users here that convinced me to get one, I’m so glad I did.

I read on here about splitting my levemir to twice a day, this definitely helped me, hadn't realised you could do that.

I’ll be interested to hear how you get on with Fiasp. Lately spikes have worked their way into my day, especially post breakfast, despite experimenting with pre bolus timings, it seems to work for a few days and I think I’ve cracked it, then it all goes awry again...beyond frustrating at the moment...meter has been on the receiving end of some choice words:(

I’m sure you’ll be able to bring your own hints and tips along too, with the experience you have.

Anyway, welcome along🙂

Hello to you all! thank you for the welcome, I am a little reluctant to pre bolus, I can have a very erratic and long work day which I know doesn't help, but there have been a couple of occasions where I have tried this, and then not been able to eat- or simply forgotten, I think this is one of the bigger reasons my consultant wants me to try fiasp. My concern so far is that it doesn't last as long as novorapid, so complex carbohydrates seem to mean I have strange peaks at different times (so far).

As for the libre, I think it is amazing- it has shown me more than I would have ever known about my control. It has caused me a little stress in that respect, but I keep reminding myself that now I know what is going on I am in a better position to fix the problems I have been having.

Reading through some of the forum is actually making me feel a little more positive about what can be done, and that I'm not quite as alone as I have always thought.
