Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi everyone. I am Paul and have been type 2 diabetic for some years.
A few days ago I had a bad attack of athlete's foot. Yesterday blisters developed on my toe and foot. There was clearly an infection so I went to an out-of-hours doctor who inspected my foot and gave me a course of Clarithromycin antibiotics which I started last night. Things don't seem any better and I am terribly worried. The fact that it is a weekend doesn't help matters.

Hi Paul, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your foot :( Was the doctor aware of your diabetes? How is your blood sugar control at the moment? If you can keep good control this will help your body to fight the infection.

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't have expected to see much progress overnight, it's usually when you have completed the course of antibiotics that it becomes clear whether they are working for you or not - how long are you supposed to take them for? It might be worth contacting your usual GP on Monday to see what they say, since they will be more familiar with your history. They may also decide to refer you to see a podiatrist. However, I hope that the anti-biotics do the trick and things are in much better shape very soon 🙂

Welcome!
If you only started them yesterday it is bit soon for them to work, if your still concerned then contact the out of hours again!

Thank you Northerner, that really helped. I emphasised my diabetes to the doctor so she was fully aware. I'll go to my GP on Monday. I have a week's course of antibiotics but my real concern is that damage can be done before Monday.

Anti biotics can usually take about 24-48 hours to fully kick in so try not too worry. Easier said than done, I know!

Hi @Paul Gibbins , Welcome . I started having problems with unexplained blisters on my toes so I know how worried you must be. To be honest I would advise going to your nearest minor injury unit rather than waiting till Monday to see your GP. Any idea how yours happened.
Antibiotics take a few days before you notice any improvement

Do you have a walk in centre or minor injuries unit near you? Would be good to go if you could. Hope you get it sorted. Sending you a hug {} 🙂

Athletes foot is the equivalent of thrush as Anti B's can cause thrush would it not be a good idea to buy some athletes foot treatment as well? Just wondering, not saying it's the right idea etc.,

Hi Paul,

It's a bit early to be going elsewhere because all that will happen is they will say carry on with the antibiotics. The one you are taking is pretty good with skin infections. If you don't see ANY improvement in four or five days, then go see your GP or practice nurse. As Sue says, you won't come to any harm by adding in some athletes foot treatment.

Thank you all for your guidance. People are very generous with their time here and it really is appreciated.
This morning the infection appears to be receding and so feel a bit better.
I have got some Daktarin powder for athlete's foot but it says not to use on broken skin so I'm a bit cautious.
Have made an appointment with my GP.

Ah, good to hear there has been some improvement Paul 🙂 Hope the good news continues, and that the GP can advise on the use of the powder 🙂 Let us know how you get on 🙂

Its good to hear their has been some improvement. Having tootsie troubles myself I always worry when I see posts about troublesome feet.

@Paul Gibbins hope you get your feet sorted Paul im sure you will be ok.. why do things always happen on a weekend! My feet have been killing me for several months.. had cortisone injections in both (yes it wrecked) bilateral plantar fasciitis though it looks like it could also be the recent diag of T2.. foot screen on tuesday.. happy days!!!

Great relief. Went to the practice nurse this morning. She said that the infection is fine and did a great job of dressing it and reassuring me. She did say that I should stop taking statins with this antibiotic. I also had a bit of a telling off for not going in at the first sign of athlete's foot. Could have saved a bit of bother.
Best not to use Daktarin if skin is broken.
