Hi again. I'm sure your friend will be able to guide you through a lot of it.
Basically its carbohydrates our bodies can't handle too well, sugar s just another carbohydrate.
For the time being, till you find what suits you, just
cut down not cut out on the white carbohydrates, potatoes esp mashed, bread esp white pasta, rice and products made with flour.
Instead till you find suitable substitutes fill up on veg that grows above ground, some root veg can be quite carby. We I have to be careful with fruit, berries are often tolerated better, grapes are little sugar bombs, fruit juice is best left alone.
Just to give you a few ideas
If you eat meat, meat is no problem for us, nor are very high meat content sausage and burgers (I love Black farmer sausages) , eggs cooked anyway you like, butter, cheese, fish but not in batter

, some nuts are low carb, , many here have Burgen linseed and soya bread, lidl protein rolls or a high protein bread, a couple of small new potatoes are often fine, the good fats are not bad for us unless you have a condition that means you have to avoid fats.
I have a couple of small new potatoes .
We have some good info and links about handling diabetes.
