Hello
Newly diagnosed a month ago, type 2 Diabetes
Taking Metformin twice daily.
Can anyone help me with these symptoms, please.
I have felt sickly this afternoon at work, slight headache, feel sick, dizzy weak feeling.
Not sure if its my blood sugars low. Not had this feeling before.
Thanks.

Hi Suef, welcome to the forum 🙂 Have you been making adjustments to your diet since diagnosis, reducing your carbohydrates (bread, rice, potatoes, pasta etc.)? It may be that you are feeling this way because your levels are lower than you have been accustomed to prior to diagnosis, so you get the symptoms of a low blood sugar without actually being particularly low - just lower than your body has come to expect. Are you able to test your levels when you feel like this? If not, I'd highly recommend getting a monitor so you can relate how you feel to what your blood glucose levels are. You could try having a small snack, such as a rich tea biscuit, when you feel this way, and if the symptoms subside then it's likely that they were due to one of these 'false' lows.

Hi Northerner!
Thanks for your swift reply.
To be honest I have been burying my head when I was pre diabetic but have been trying to have smaller portions of potato, rice etc.
Having fish twice weekly and eating more fruit, all varieties. I was always a fruit eater.
I have a very active job , on my feet nearly all day so by coffee break in morning I'm really hungry. only having small lunch as I know I'm over weight. . feeling slightly Tonight I didn't feel good at all driving home so was going really slowly. As soon as I got home had a glass of milk and biscuits, just a couple. Feeling slightly better, although headache.
Your reasoning sounds it could be right but I don't know as I haven't experienced it before. and yes, I need to be able to test my levels.
Will take your advice on board, thank you. 🙂

Thanks Grovesy!
Quite unsure about everything Diabetic but hopefully will learn tons from this site🙂

Hi Suef and welcome from another type 2. It seems there's so much to learn when first diagnosed but lots of helpful people here to give advice and keep you motivated 🙂

Hi Suef Welcome. If it is a false hypo your suffering from, they are just as horrid a a real one. a small snack like Northener mentioned will help.
It's very unlikely you will be prescribed a glucose meter and test strips, do ask to see if they will. If not and you can afford to fund the test strips then the SD Codefree is the most economical to fund, other brands test strips cost £15 to £25 ish for 50 strips.

We use the mmolL measurement, you will also need to purchase more test strips and lancets as they normally only provide a few to start you off.
Being able to test means you can find out how carbs affect you so you can make educated changes

Hi Sue,

Yes those symptoms can be a little alarming, but they should pass as your body gets used to your new BG levels. The good news is that on your current medication you are extremely unlikely to have a real hypo.

Thank you Martin,
Yes, it was horrid, I'm very good with my medication so couldn't understand what was happening.
Everyone's advice has been very helpful. will be on this site constantly, I can see that.
Thank you everyone for your replies.

Hi Sue, I had those symptoms when the GP first put me on Metformin (I'm not on it now). It wasn't hypos but the body has a massive adjustment to make after living on the sugar rush for so long. I'm sure things will settle as your levels stabilise. Welcome and good luck.

Hi Sue and welcome to the forum. There is a lot to learn. One thing I did pick up on is that yu like fruit, be careful with fruit as it contains a lot of natural sugars and can cause high spikes in blood sugar levels. I used to eat 5-7 pieces of fruit a day. I now only eat 1-2 portions a day and certan fruits I cant eat anymore as they spiked my blood too much.

Hi @Suef, just echoing what Stitch said about fruit: I love bananas (and custard...mmmmm) but have steered well clear as they spiked too much. The safest things for most people are berries, blueberries, strawberries etc., and I find kiwi fruit is also ok for me. Good news is you can have dollops of cream with them 😉

All the best!

Hello @Suef ...welcome. I can only echo what's already been written but you'll find this a great place to ask questions, learn from the hard-earned experience of others and, if you want to, have a bit of a laugh and let-off steam too. Hopefully you're feeling better today. More than likely a 'false Hypo' as Northerner suggested but very unpleasant nevertheless. All of us will have felt like that at one time or other so you're not alone. 🙂

I use this meter and it's very easy to manage. I'd highly recommend it. Good luck and welcome to the forum. :D
