Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hello just joined this second and have been type 2 since September 2020. finding it all a bundle to be honest. taking meds all good, but side effects of the type 2 confusing and i sometimes forget i have it. i have other issues along the way too which don't help and allergies which interfere. any advice, suggestions always welcome. i have to loose 2-3 stone and reduce cholesterol levels dramatically. i have thyroid issues and gastro issues, which i feel are very much related to my type 2 but getting consultants and gps to listen and agree with me is my hardest job. thank you al in advance of any help and advice you give.

Welcome, I’m new here too, hopefully you will find it a lovely supportive group that I have found too.

Welcome @shelleyhills 🙂 What allergies do you have? What was your HbA1C at diagnosis?
Allergic to yogurts, soft cheese, aniseed. I react badly to apples, oranges, satsumas, grapes, peaches, kiwi, strawberries, melon in the case of bloating, cramps and tummy upsets. Tomato raw is a no no but cooked is to min amount every other day. Brown bread, pasta rice my body really hates. So you see what would be good to help gives me poorly side effects.

Welcome to the forum @shelleyhills . Sorry to hear about your diagnosis but pleased that you have found us.

The food that you list that you cannot tolerate are mostly high carb foods. These would definitely impact on your glucose levels and so make you feel poorly, since your body is not able to match the glucose that will come from these with the insulin that you need to process them. They are a lot of the foods that people find it hard to give up, so you have ahead start. Getting to grips with your T2 management may well help your other issues and for many people they feel a lot healthier after their diagnosis.

Do read around the forum and come back with any questions that you have. There is plenty of experience to draw on from others on here. just ask.

Hi @shelleyhills and welcome from me as well. I joined the club in September as well.

Hi @shelleyhills, welcome to the forum.

How do you feel your other issues interfere with your diabetes? It's a bit of a minefield to start off with but things should settle down as you get used to managing things.

Sorry to hear that you are now having to balance a diagnosis with T2 diabetes alongside other health challenges.

One of the biggest questions when trying to get to grips with your diabetes is often ‘what can I eat’ and while there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits. Reducing your portions of carbohydrate ’staples’ can be a very effective way to help your body with blood glucose levels.

Many new members find it can be really helpful to keep a food diary for a week or two. Be brutally honest! Note down everything you eat and drink. It can be especially helpful to estimate the amount of carbohydrate in the meals and snacks to give you an idea of which foods are the main sources of carbs in your menu. In your case it may also be helpful to keep track of any symptoms you experience after meals?
