Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I was diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic about six years ago. I only realised after I lost about three stones in three months & went urinated about twenty times a day!! I am not going to lie - I went on the medication (Gliclazide & Metformin) & put all the weight back on. The easy way to lose the weight was to stop the medication which I did.

Unfortunately I then found out I could eat anything & still lose weight. I developed a very sweet tooth & was eating masses of chocolate, cakes & sweets every day. Having found the panacea I lost all guilt that I associated with eating as I could eat as much as I liked & not put weight on. This obviously only worked because I did not take my medication.

I missed all appointments. I missed all treatment. I don't drink, I don't smoke, I ahve no vices so my justification was I treated myself to endless confectionary. I went to my checkup this year as I was losing the feeling in my toes & fingers. Wake up call.

First day of normality today.

My name's Paul & I'm a chocaholic (I am also an alchoholic but have not drank for six years & three months, three month later I was diabetic so switched from one 'ic to another one). I do have a it's not fair attitude but I do know if I don't start the new diabetic me the consequences are very, very serious.

Any help or advice would be much welcomed!!

I would recommend you seek help continued weight loss whilst eating anything is more an indication of Type 1.

I agree with grovesy, it's very unusual for a T2 to lose weight like that, much more common for a T1.
Also it's much more common for both Metformin and Gliclazide to be associated with weight loss rather than weight gain due to their common side effects of indigestion, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea etc.

Welcome to the forum @Twechar Bhoy

thank you for sharing your story so honestly, and openly. And well done for realising that you need to take a whole new approach to your diabetes if you are to slow the progress of potentially very unpleasant stuff that elevated glucose levels puts you at risk of.

Well done on beating the drink too. That‘s a great thing to have done.

Did you have any support and help for stopping drinking? eg counselling or a group

It sounds like you have quite a troubled relationship with food, and i wonder if you might benefit from some professional support to turn things around?

Hello and welcome. Well done on staying dry. 🙂

Hello @Twechar Bhoy
Congratulations on staying on the wagon. 🙂
As I newly diagnosed diabetic myself, I strongly agree with what @grovesy and @ianf0ster have said.
Prior to my diagnosis I could eat anything and the weight continued to fall off. I lost about two stone in around four months, and I was eating a lot because I was always hungry. I was also peeing a lot and drinking copious amounts of water.
It may be better to speak to your GP and tell them what’s been happening.
I hope you get sorted. Good luck.

Welcome to the forum Paul. Well done on turning things around.

I agree with @everydayupsanddowns, it would be worth asking for some support from your diabetic team with regards to diet, anxiety about weight etc. It's great that you're back in touch with them and already had a check up this year.
