Dispensing practices could find they are doing "more work for less money" following the new flat-rate NHS drugs' pricing agreement, the DDA has warned.

Under the terms of the new five-year Pharmaceutical Price Regulation Scheme (PPRS) that comes into effect across the UK from January, 2014, drugs companies will not be able to increase NHS prices for two years. From 2016, NHS prices will rise by 1.8% (for two years) and from 2018, by 1.9%.

A value-based pricing mechanism (VBM) will also be applied to NHS drugs' pricing policy in England during 2014, but this will only take effect from Autumn, following public consultation. Until now, the DH has maintained that VBM pricing would take effect from January, following the expiry of the current PPRS.
