Later this year i'm moving out of my current health area, so, i believe i shall have to see a new doctor etc... Has anyone got experience of this in recent years?

My current gp has been very good with repeat prescriptions and things but what's concerning me is that a new gp may decide to allow me fewer test strips. Are there any rules about this within the NHS or do i simply have to rely on the new gp's goodwill/budget?

Experiences do seem to vary, but I think most of the people on insulin don't have too much difficulty getting strips if they can justify how they are used. I recently had mine increased from 200 to 300 per script as it ties in with my other meds in lasting me around 50 days. My GP did question it, and thought my average 6 tests a day a lot, but I quickly accounted for every one as necessary and she agreed. How many do you currently get and use per day?

Must admit I've had vague thought of moving lately and one of the first things I thought of was would my team be as good elsewhere - shows how quickly they become important to you as I'm less than 2 years diagnosed!

I moved 30 clicks last oct and was very worried, when I had the time to, about the chance of things not being so rosey! But alas they are better!! New doc has a 12 year old T1 and everything is done from surgery no need to spend hours on hospital waiting room!!

There probably are rules maybe some NICE ones, I'm sure others can help you out there, I'll just say good luck hope the move ain't too stressful either!

i think it is a case of being firm if you need to, and go armed with evidence if they get shirty - log books etc.

i've gone from having an awful GP last year (this is the one that told me testing 3 times a day was sufficient, and would not increase my repeat prescription, so i just had to keep putting in the prescription more often) to an amazing one - this guy will give me whatever i want/need.

if you know where you are moving, could you do some digging around? maybe find a GP/practice that has a few other type ones, so they at least know what things you'll be after?

Thanks guys.
That's partly why i'm worried. I get 8 boxes of strips at a time and my very nice gp dosen't ever question how often i repeat. 8x51, that's a little over 400 at a time; but i couldn't tell you how often i repeat - probably once every 5-7 weeks i would guess.

Can't bear the thought of being limited too much although i know they are expensive. My argument is that's why i've been able to maintain a consistent level of good control.

What you will have is the repeat side of your prescription to take with you when you see your new GP and that will prove how many you are getting at a time. Will you be moving to a different hospital team? if not then your current DSN/consultant should be able to contact them if they don't want to issue you with enough test strips.
As Alan said being able to explain why you would be testing at certain times will help them to understand why you need the amount you do.

It is worrying i will be moving in the next few weeks and am hoping that my new Dr's are as good as i have had in the past.

Good luck withthe move. I hope the care you get is at least as good as or better than the care you are getting now.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have to go and speak to the doctors in the area and 'sound them out' a bit before committing.
Hopefully they will agree the amount i already get. Not sure yet if i'm going to be just inside or outside of the area covered by my specialist.
It's another irritation of this blessed condition.
