Type 1
My 11 year old daughter was diagnosed on Tuesday with type 1, There is distant history in the family but nothing recent although my mum was a coeliac and I understand there could be potential links.

Welcome to the forum, Claire, glad you found us. How are you all getting along? Are you getting good support from your diabetes team?

Hi and welcome 🙂
I know it's a big shock for you both, but just take one day at a time x
My grandad and great aunt had type 1, it skipped a generation and landed on me 🙄

Hi Claire - sorry to hear this - always feel sorry for kids as I was lucky and didn't get it till adulthood - and its hard enough for an intelligent adult to face it let alone a kiddie.

Have you been recommended this book? Type 1 diabetes in children adolescents and young adults by Ragnar Hanas - it's written precisely for people in your position and actually is extremely useful for T1s of any age.

Not cheap but make sure you get the latest edition - it has sometimes been called '... teenagers ..' and gets revised every so often to bring it up to date again. My diabetes nurse at the hospital clinic always seemed to have it on her desk with Post-It notes stuck here there and everywhere with names on them, for things she needed to show patients! Rarely - it went back onto her bookshelf.

Are you also aware of the JDRF? - they organise all sorts of things involving children and also do research. https://jdrf.org.uk/

Hope you get on OK - but always ask if you are ever in doubt or simply don't know something.

Thanks just ordered the book, it looks great and gets fantastic reviews like you said!

Welcome to the forum, I hope you get lots of support from other parents.

Hi Claire

I hope that you and your daughter ar ebeginning to get your head round things. There is a lot to learn very quickly and I am glad that you have ordered the Ragnar Hanas book. I still dip into it and find it easy to follow.

Your daughter is diong well doing her own injections and taking that in her stride. Don’t underestimate the impact on you as well and do ask any questions you have. There are plenty of us on here who are happy to help.
