Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all, I've found this website to be a great resource but only just found the forum today.

I was confirmed as having Type 2 on 9/12/16 by phone call from my GP. Have my first appointment with him tomorrow afternoon. HbA1c was 108, which I believe is quite high. In the last week I have read lots of information on the website and a couple of books on reversing type 2 and have already begun to make massive lifestyle changes (diet and exercise).

My main worry is about medication, I don't want it! If I can do this reversal without medication then that is my aim. Although if medication is a necessity then I am willing to use it briefly. I am led to believe that Metformin is the first drug of choice for prescription......can you come off this further down the line if your status improves?

Sorry to be asking questions on my first post, as I'm new I'm not fully familiar with forum etiquette yet.

Look forward to getting to know so many of you in the coming weeks/months.

Kev 🙂

Hi Kev Welcome, Please don't apologise for asking questions and the first post is an ideal time to start asking 🙂.
IMO you can come off of Metformin later on if your control is good, you can also discuss trying without meds first with your Gp , though with an Hb1ac of 108 I doubt if your gp would be happy about that as it is high.

About the reversal. Though I have no wish to dash your hopes , ATM Diabetes cannot be cured ! however a few people who have T2 are able to control there Diabetes so well that though they have to watch their diet they Don't need diabetic meds.

Welcome to a club no one wants to join. I'm 4 weeks in and my hba1c was 117 and anything over 48 is high!!!

With such a high score you need to know how quickly your diet and medication are taking effect in getting it down so you need a monitor. I was given one. On the day I saw the Diabetic Nurse (3 days after phone call from GP) they took my blood in the surgery and it was almost 15 (they want you to aim for 4-8). Away I went with my monitor and a couple of hours later after lunch it was over 15. I was prescribed Metformin, one a day for a week then two a day. It took 2 weeks before I saw readings in single figures. I abandoned carbs like potatoes, rice, pasta and bread. Now I'm testing by eating small portions of them and seeing how much my readings increase after eating them. My target is low fives on waking and before before bed and under 8 two hours after eating.

I have had no side effects from tablets thankfully. I take with a full glass of water as I don't always eat as I do intermittent fasting (I'm doing 24 hour fast today so no food until 8pm, only tea to drink). I'm in a sh!t mood as didn't sleep at all last night and the stress of not sleeping made my blood sugar be 6.8 this morning!!

Personally I would say ignore advice of 3 potatoes, a 15 chips, a handful of rice/pasta, 2 slices of bread a day etc. which is what I was told by diabetic nurse. I said I wanted to go low carb and she then gave me a list of food carb values and offered me a loan of her book carbs and cals. I cut them out completely and the only bread I eat now is Lidl's protein rolls from their bakery as less carbs in there than 1 slice of bread.

I was weighed and measured and although in 4 weeks I've only lost about 5lb I've lost 4 cm from my waist. I try to be more active and even to the point I only use upstairs loo if at home to make me walk up stairs!!

Welcome to the forum Kev. I'm hoping to control my D with diet and no meds too. I'm still in denial though. :D I've not seen my BG go over 8.8 ever...I might be pre-D but that's all imho.

Good luck with getting your 'diet' on track. There's lot of helpful links and info on here.
