Thanks for the welcome
Hi everyone, thanks for the warm welcome.
In answer to Northerner's query, I was diagnosed as I have an annual blood test for Thyroxine levels - I asked my GP about Chloesterol testing as I've been having some mild 'niggles' that I thought were to do with heart disease (now realise that they were probably to do with diabetes); my GP also tested my fasting blood sugars - 17 at 1st test, then after a week long very strict no sugar, low carb diet it went to 13.3 with HbA1c of 11.6% Little doubt there! Started on Metformin 500mg daily for 1st week and now twice daily, have been testing some mornings (nurse said I don't NEED to test, but the control freak in me can't not know) fasting levels between 9.8 - 8.6 so some way to go yet.
Reading other posts, I think I've been fairly well informed by my Practice Nurse (plus I've had some experience from the other side and there's a family history of diabetes). I've attended a Diabetes Essentials education session run by a dietician, which was helpful and have had info about eye screening. I'd already arranged a private podiatry appointment before diagnosis, which I kept as I don't meet enough need for NHS podiatry (and hope never to meet those criteria - I like my toes!)
I'm due to see my Practice Nurse again next week when the specific questions will kick in - I'm a bit of a control freak (my kids would say total control freak), so need to know more about my diet - 'in moderation' doesn't do it for me! I'm trying to get my head around low GI diet and will certainly be reading some of the books reccommended to others - off to the library tomorrow.
This is turning into an essay - sorry to bore, but it's good to know there are others who understand I just need to tell someone - family getting fed up and work colleagues like me up to now (I think!) - don't want to go on too much there.
Thanks agin for the welcome 🙂
