A RADICAL operation which can control diabetes has been performed in Scotland for the first time.

In the ?8000 op, an ultra-thin plastic tube known as an endobarrier was fitted inside a man’s upper intestine.

The coating means food bypasses part of the digestion process and it also limits the amount of sugar absorbed, resulting in lower blood sugar levels.

The patient, who wants to remain anonymous, is one of just 500 people in the world to have the procedure.

He said: “I’m really excited. I think it’s great to be the first person in Scotland.”

Shame the picture implies (and states!) that all people with diabetes have to inject insulin :(
