Melbourne researchers have developed a new clot-busting drug that overcomes the risk of bleeding - a complication that prevents thousands of stroke and heart attack patients each year from receiving the potentially life-saving treatment.

In a study published in the US journal Circulation Research on Monday, scientists from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute said they had created a safer, more targeted clot-busting drug with fewer side effects than those currently used. They are hoping the drug, which has been deemed safe and effective in mice, will soon be in human clinical trials.

For more than a decade, clot-busting drugs have been given to people who have suffered a heart attack or stroke to try to dissolve blockages in arteries in the heart or brain. This helps to prevent the loss of heart or brain tissue, which dies when it is starved of blood flow.
