Hi Guys and Girls

Just thought I would say Hi. I have signed up on here as I have recently been told I have slow onset Type 1 Diabetes! I dont know anyone around me who suffers from this condition, thankfully!! So I am here to get to know others who are sailing in the same boat! Would be good to hear how you all deal with Diabetes on a day to day basis 🙂

Have a good day and maybe chat soon 😉

Hi Kev welcome to the forum, hope you re handling things well

are you a star pupil then 😉

Hi *waves* 🙂

Thanks Steff 🙂

Ye I seem to be coping with it, Largley because I have too! At the moment I am Type 1.5 so I just waiting for my new daily routine to change again 🙂

And ye, Defo a star pupil! 😉 lol

Hi Kev, welcome to the forum 🙂 How did you come to be diagnosed? I'm in a similar category to you, my diagnosis came after a couple of years of symptoms that I put down to other things. What medication are you on?

Hey, Northerner

Back In oct 2012 I found I was always thirsty and as a result back and forth the loo!! I thought it best to be safe so i took myself off to be tested! and I found out there was an issue on my 33rd Birthday! It all seemed like a mad panic and I was told that i should expect to be on insuline by the end of that week!! Since then it has turned out that i have slow onset and I am still producing some of my own insuline!! as well as injecting twice a day!! I am currently on Humilin I 4 units in the evening and 5 units in the morning!! Altho I was put on 8 units in the morning first of all!! But I am still findng that I am hypoing by 11.30am as my levels are around 3.2 at this time of day!!

It can be tricky managing things when your pancreas is still pitching in, things should settle after a while. I'm a rather peculiar case - diagnosed aged 49 a week before I was due to run a marathon! My running had suffered quite a bit for a time but I put it down to other things, then I caught a stomach virus that ended up overwhelming my pancreas and resulting in ketoacidosis. Since diagnosis my insulin requirements have fallen considerably (down 60-70%). Theory is that injecting can sometimes also allow your beta cells to recover a bit. This seems to have continued for me as my insulin needs have been declining even now after nearly 5 years 😱 Who knows what's going on, I don't think I'm typical, but we've got a number of T1.5s as members here, many of them originally misdiagnosed as T2 largely because of age, so it is good to hear that you got an early, more accurate diagnosis.

I would recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - don't be put off by the title, it's relevant whatever your age and covers most conceivable topics, so an excellent reference or source of questions for your team! 🙂

wow so your situation is a random one then!! I think my units of insuline will have to drop as lunch time hypos seem to be creeping in!!!
Thanks for suggesting the book! I may have to order that one!! 🙂

So how long have you had the betes?

It will be 5 years in June 😱 With hindsight, it's really funny to think that I still expected to be out of hospital and on my flight to Stockholm to run the marathon, despite the fact that I had dropped 17 pounds in weight in three days and been at death's door before they gave me insulin!

Hi Kev

Just a common or garden T1 here. They hadn't invented T1.5 at the time of my diagnosis LOL Or glucometers or injection pens - let alone insulin pumps - still boiling up pee in test tubes and boiling up glass/metal syringes in a saucepan. Or the internet ! Ragnar Hanas may have been invented by then, but not his book, sadly.

Luckily, I survived to see it all LOL

As you say, PITA though it undoubtedly is, best to just be pragmatic and get on with it, really.

They'll probably tell you there will be a cure in 10 years ...... :D if they haven't told you that already. (Just a tip on that subject - I shouldn't hold your breath if I were you .....)

Now then, you have advised DVLA and all THAT jazz?

thats some serious weight loss in such a small period of time!! Im not the biggest of guys weighing in at 10.4 stone!! If i lost weight as a result of the diabetes I would be in some trouble!!!lol

Hello Mate,

Haha so you are a veteran then!! I bet the Diabetic kids of today dont know they are born!haha 😛

And ye funny enough my consultant told me that he expects a cure to be found by the time he retires!!...shame he was about 12 really!!lol

Ye I have told DVLA and my insurance company!! I was shocked that my insurance didnt go up!! normally if you tell them you have upgraded wiper blades they put you premiums up!!lol. Just waiting on my new 3 year licence to come through!

Reason I asked about DVLA was more to do with hypos TBH Kev. I had terrible trouble with Humulin and hypos at one stage in my D career.

Please DO follow ALL the rules about testing very frequently and carrying hypo remedy and snacking if you are under 5 and all that. However silly they may appear.

(The crash barriers on the M42 have never been the same since I kept attacking them ..... lucky no HGVs were involved .... 😱)
